It was only fitting that the new Nebraska School Activities Association building was dedicated on Friday to the youth of the state.

“This building is dedicated to the many students across the state who have and will participate in high school athletics,” said Jim Tenopir, executive director of the NSAA. “We are approaching the 100th year of this association’s existence, and what a fitting way to usher in the second hundred years in a building like this.”

The new building, at 500 Charleston St. next to Haymarket Park, also houses the Nebraska Coaches Association and will be the home of the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame.

“There is no shortage of activities to get kids involved in,” Gov. Dave Heineman said at the ceremony. “We have to find ways to get young people involved, because if they are doing something after school, they won’t be getting into trouble.”

Bob Kanaby, the executive director of the National Federation of High School Associations, said there are two kinds of cornerstones in buildings.

“Every building has a cornerstone, the so-called pivotal part of the structure,” he said. “But the true cornerstone of this building is the membership who touch the lives of young people far beyond the walls of this building.”

Tenopir also announced a two-year extension of U.S. Bank as the premier corporate partner of NSAA and that U.S. Cellular will also be joining the association as a corporate partner. It also will sponsor the U.S. Cellular Cup, the yearly points competition of all activities in four classes for boys and girls sports and for the combined awards.

Winners of the U.S. Cellular Cup for the 2007-08 school year were:

* Class A: all-school and boys — Millard West; girls — Omaha Marian.

* Class B: all-school and girls — Elkhorn; boys — Lincoln Pius X.

* Class C: all-school and boys — Norfolk Catholic; girls — Kearney Catholic.

* Class D: all-school, girls and boys — Humphrey St. Francis.

Earlier in the day, the NSAA Board of Control added two approved rulings at its monthly meeting. The first concerns athletes and mandates that any participant ejected a second or third time from a contest for unsportsmanlike conduct will be ineligible for the next two contests.

In another move concerning sportsmanship, the board ruled that coaches who are ejected from a contest will be required to successfully complete the NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching online course within 10 days at the coach’s expense (currently $60). Failure to do so will leave the coach suspended from coaching the remainder of the season. If the ejection occurs near the end of the season or during postseason play, the coach must complete the course to be able to coach the next season.
