Letters, 9/4: Obama our best hope
I truly am speechless. I have never in my life become teary-eyed at listening to a politician speak, but on Aug. 28 I did. There is nothing, nothing in our Democratic presidential nominee’s speech that can be denied. We have to make a change. How can we do that with someone who has voted with our current disaster of a president 90 percent of the time? John McCain a maverick? I think not.
For the first time in a long time, I am excited about this country. I am excited about all the long-forgotten possibilities we have ahead of us. Without realizing it, Americans have been in a collective depression. We’ve forgotten all the good we have done and can do. And I say thank goodness we are fortunate enough to have a fellow American who is willing to truly make a difference in how our country is run.
A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for a better, stronger, richer America.
Kelly Fushia, Lincoln
Why do we have to lose fair?
Everyone says it’s a done deal. Why? We didn’t get any say in the matter.
We went to the Nebraska State Fair at State Fair Park and had a great time. Now why would we change a tradition that works and give away everything? Our taxes have gone for new roads, a new entrance, upgraded buildings, etc. Now to just give it to the university makes no sense to me.
Please let’s change back to something good. Leave it alone; we love it. I guess I only have one more fair to attend. I won’t be going to Grand Island, and I don’t think I’m alone.
See you at the fair one more year.
Charlene Kalkwarf, Lincoln
Whoa, Waverly
The policymakers of Waverly are considering a study on an overpass across the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and U.S. 6 at the intersections of 141st and 148th streets.
Recently, I attended a gathering of Waverly residents concerned about the closing of our current crossings at those intersections. The individuals who attended discussed their opposition to the closing of those crossings and the loss of the convenience those crossings provide to the residents of the community.
I recommend that the residents of Waverly communicate with the policymakers, because they appear to be out of touch with constituents. Officials have mentioned that there is in place a controlled growth policy and that the application of that program is what will lead us into the future. My communications with landowners in and outside of the city’s limits have indicated other conclusions.
I started the Nebraska Landowners Organization as a forum to benefit the landowners of the state of Nebraska and to assist the landowners of the state in providing a resource to communicate what they believe is their best interests.
The community of Waverly deserves a comprehensive plan that benefits the landowners today just as much as the landowners tomorrow. I believe a comprehensive plan includes everyone and everything.
I believe that all current and new business on behalf of the city of Waverly should be halted forthwith, excluding the renovations of the sewage treatment plant. I do not agree with the purchase of land for George Lawson Park; I do not agree with the development of land in that location for the reasons stated.
I do not agree with the use of eminent domain to forcibly obtain property for a park. I disagree with spending money for a park without a comprehensive plan in place approved in cooperation with the landowners.

The Tony Rezko, William Ayers, Rev. Wright saga is well documented and there are real questions to be raised about these relationships.
You also have to ask yourself why people like Fidel Castro, Louis Farrakhan, Michael Klonsky, Daniel Ortega, Muammar Qadhafi, why on Obama’s own website does he tout the support of Marxists/Communists/Socialists (http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/group/MarxistsSocialistsCommunistsforObama), the Muslim American Society (Muslim Brotherhood), the New Black Panther Party, the Socialist Party USA, the Communist Party USA, the Communist Party of IL,…
Are none of these red flags? Should you not ask yourself why certain salacious people or groups are throwing their support behind this man.
Why are foreign nationals like Mosir, Hosam, and Osama Edwan, from Rafah a city in the Gaza Strip, shich just also happens to be a HAMAS strong hold, sending large donations to Obama's campaign? Look it up if you'd like: http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/can_ind/P80003338/3/E/
Use your common sense, ask real, tough, serious questions about this man…that’s all I’m saying. "

Every time I read a post that says 'socialism', I just laugh. We live in an area where people like to repeat stuff they heard, and since it's four-syllables, they feel sophisticated.
This election is going to get voters out--that's exciting. People are interested and excited about a presidential election for once. It's easy to sit back and bash on people, but every time I read 'he says nothing of substance', I again think people heard that word somewhere, because saying someone has no substance is an empty statement in itself. I watched the Palin speech last night, a true outsider to standard DC politics, a real fresh voice if any exsists, yet attacked by a vicious political machine. In the "none of the above" selection we have this election, I will vote for McCain simply because of the attacks instantly coming from the media and Dem leadership on a female who actually has a set of family values and some leadership expierience. That act alone put me now on the side of McCain and Palin. So for me and many like me there is another choice, tell the media they are wrong and do not pick my President. And hope that in 2012 then maybe we the people can support someone of true substance in this media circus of election politics. "

RussianMike on pride in my country wrote on September 4, 2008 3:06 pm:
For the first time in my short lifespan, I'm actually warming up to the possibility of, finally, being PROUD of my country.
I love my country deeply. I couldn't have asked for a better place to be born and raised. I grew up in Nebraska, and I wouldn't have traded it for the world. Our streets are relatively safe, I've received a solid education, and I have known some very kind, thoughtful, and considerate Americans.
But what I see out here on Midwestern streets is not what I see and hear when I add it all up. I am disappointed, dismayed, and even outright ashamed of the way our country has been lead since I can remember being aware of a world larger than the West A neighborhood.
Our leadership, and by association, WE, have been irresponsible. The size of the national debt astounds me; I recently watched a documentary that claimed each family's share of the national debt is around $90,000, and climbing. This is out of control. Scream about lowering taxes all you'd like, but this has to stop. Taxes cannot continue to be lowered, and we cannot continue to spend money on things we don't need. We'll disagree on what the country "needs" and what it does not, but I, and my children, and their children, should not owe hundreds of thousands of dollars apiece to foreign debtors.
We have been hypocrites. We signed on to the Geneva Conventions, until someone decided it might serve our interests better to break them. What right do we have to hold anyone else to a standard higher than the standard to which we hold ourselves?
We have been cruel, we have been greedy, we have been ignorant, we have been bullies.
I love my home, but I cannot be proud of those things. From what I observe in my day to day life, we are better than this. And I care enough to want to make it so.
So don't tell me I don't love my country enough because I won't wear flags plastered all over my body. Don't tell me I'm not a patriot because I don't blindly support everything every public official does and says.
I suspect Barack Obama is neither the savior nor the anti-Christ. But having considered the two candidates and their positions and proposals, I think he is more likely than John McCain to lead the country in a direction that I will be proud of. "

In 2002 the latest year of available data, the top 5 percent of taxpayers paid more than one-half (53.8 percent) of all individual income taxes, but reported roughly one-third (30.6 percent) of income.
The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid 33.7 percent of all individual income taxes in 2002. This group of taxpayers has paid more than 30 percent of individual income taxes since 1995. Moreover, since 1990 this group’s tax share has grown faster than their income share.
Taxpayers who rank in the top 50 percent of taxpayers by income pay virtually all individual income taxes.
What does this all mean? We already do tax the rich! We are already redistributing the wealth. How much more is needed?! When will enough be enough? I truly believe that some people will not be happy until NOBODY else makes more than they do. There are certainly more than a few statements in today's comments that support that notion. "

3. I read a piece in the Chicago Sun-Times about all those "bills" Obama sponsored in the Ill legislature. According to this story, others worked on the bills until they were ready to be voted on and then Emil Jones said "Hey we need to get Obama's name on this." But more importantly, 66% of all corporations MAKING A PROFIT, paid NO corporate income taxes!!! The AVERAGE tax on an American corporation now sits at about 6%!!! While GOPers like to proclaim our tax RATES are higher than Europes, they cite the statutory rates on the book but ignore the actual rates they pay, which are only a fraction of what they might pay.
What I've heard thus far from the GOP convention...They're great at insults, sneers, making fun (of vets 4yrs ago, of community workers and helpers this year)...But I'm still waiting to hear their plans for things...Economy? Healthcare? Getting out of Iraq? Housing and banking collapse? Didn't the GOP used to claim they were the party of ideas? Seems like their only idea this year is how best to make fun of Obama, and then scream "Liberal bias, I'm a POW" whenever anyone asks them what they really intend to do if they win! "

Those are to be individual gifts, not government gifts. You are to give from your heart, not because Washington forces you to. It is well documented that when people have more of their own money and less government sponsored programs that people generously take care of others. If you look at US history you will find that this is what occurred before the welfare state. We need less government so we can get back to this. "
