ST. PAUL, Minn. — Republican Neb. Gov. Dave Heineman disagrees with his party’s presidential candidate on whether the federal government should continue to prop up the ethanol industry.

McCain supports cutting the mandate that requires 9 billion gallons of biofuels like ethanol be blended into gasoline this year and about 11 billion gallons next year.

Republicans this week called for an end to mandates for the corn-based fuel in their national platform.

Heineman spoke Thursday from the Republican National Convention with Susan McGinnis of CleanSkies.tv, an online news network.

Heineman said ethanol is a key part of reducing the nation’s dependence on foreign oil. Nebraska ranks second nationally in ethanol production.

" Gov Dave not agreeing with the RNC???. If Ethanol is as good as he says it is let it stand on it own 2 feet. No more subsidies or mandates. It is amazing one side he preaches less goverment but unless it means less money or power for his own political cronies he shows a different color. "

" Ethanol's best days this time around are behind it. This is an industry that Nebraska has relied upon heavily to redevelop some rural areas. But like Lemmings to the Sea the entrenched Republican Leadership in this state support the candidate MOST likely to drive a stake through it's heart. Do not be mistaken, McCain and Palin will quickly sign the legislation that will leave rusting ethanol plants dotting Nebraska's landscape. Obama will likely not move so quickly if at all to destroy this industry. Read McCain's position on ethanol on his website and other sources. So much for leadership in this state. "

" Ethanol from corn made sense back when we had billion+ bushel surpluses of corn in this country, but now I wonder. I don't get the same mileage with the 10% blend of ethanol as I do with regular unleaded, which is getting harder to find. Oil is no doubt subsidized too, in some ways, tax breaks or something, so can't say it isn't wihout fault too. "

" All I know is, I can't afford food anymore. I've been told it's because so much good arable land is going to grow grain that's going into our gas tanks instead of into our cereal boxes and bread loaves.
That would be OK if there was a savings at the pump, but it's 3 cents a gallon at most. I'd rather feed my kids, thanks. "

" maybe the incentive that is needed to push corn based to cellulose based ethanol. Might be selling corn stalks and hay bales intead of corn some day soon. "

" Of course he's going to support ethanol. He's in Nebraska! He's got to keep the state happy and the citizens have a huge interest in corn-based ethanol. We make corn! "

" Gov. Heineman is a staunch Republican who believes in the free market! What's that? He wants to subsidize products his state produces? Huh. I see. "

" ethanol/government is not the answer - it's the problem. higher grain prices for food and lower mpg in vehicles. another great government program brought to you proudly by big government. drop the subsidy and let's see where ethanol goes - if it survives, great! if not, so be it. . . "

" Charles, If we stop the subsidy for ethanol then we need to do the same thing for oil subsidys and the farm subsidys. If we did that it would save taxpayers billions if not trillions. Like you said lets see if they survive on their own. "
