Letters, 9/4: Obama our best hope

Thursday, Sep 04, 2008 - 12:58:23 am CDT

I truly am speechless. I have never in my life become teary-eyed at listening to a politician speak, but on Aug. 28 I did. There is nothing, nothing in our Democratic presidential nominee’s speech that can be denied. We have to make a change. How can we do that with someone who has voted with our current disaster of a president 90 percent of the time? John McCain a maverick? I think not.

For the first time in a long time, I am excited about this country. I am excited about all the long-forgotten possibilities we have ahead of us. Without realizing it, Americans have been in a collective depression. We’ve forgotten all the good we have done and can do. And I say thank goodness we are fortunate enough to have a fellow American who is willing to truly make a difference in how our country is run.

A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for a better, stronger, richer America.

Kelly Fushia, Lincoln

Why do we have to lose fair?

Everyone says it’s a done deal. Why? We didn’t get any say in the matter.

We went to the Nebraska State Fair at State Fair Park and had a great time. Now why would we change a tradition that works and give away everything? Our taxes have gone for new roads, a new entrance, upgraded buildings, etc. Now to just give it to the university makes no sense to me.

Please let’s change back to something good. Leave it alone; we love it. I guess I only have one more fair to attend. I won’t be going to Grand Island, and I don’t think I’m alone.

See you at the fair one more year.

Charlene Kalkwarf, Lincoln

Whoa, Waverly

The policymakers of Waverly are considering a study on an overpass across the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and U.S. 6 at the intersections of 141st and 148th streets.

Recently, I attended a gathering of Waverly residents concerned about the closing of our current crossings at those intersections. The individuals who attended discussed their opposition to the closing of those crossings and the loss of the convenience those crossings provide to the residents of the community.

I recommend that the residents of Waverly communicate with the policymakers, because they appear to be out of touch with constituents. Officials have mentioned that there is in place a controlled growth policy and that the application of that program is what will lead us into the future. My communications with landowners in and outside of the city’s limits have indicated other conclusions.

I started the Nebraska Landowners Organization as a forum to benefit the landowners of the state of Nebraska and to assist the landowners of the state in providing a resource to communicate what they believe is their best interests.

The community of Waverly deserves a comprehensive plan that benefits the landowners today just as much as the landowners tomorrow. I believe a comprehensive plan includes everyone and everything.

I believe that all current and new business on behalf of the city of Waverly should be halted forthwith, excluding the renovations of the sewage treatment plant. I do not agree with the purchase of land for George Lawson Park; I do not agree with the development of land in that location for the reasons stated.

I do not agree with the use of eminent domain to forcibly obtain property for a park. I disagree with spending money for a park without a comprehensive plan in place approved in cooperation with the landowners.

Greg Dudley, founder, Nebraska Landowners Organization

" A Richer America? Socialism makes the government rich at the expense of the individual. Rather than than individual working hard and becoming a success you expect the government to take care of you. Once I was young and had nothing and I voted democrat. Now that I've worked hard and the government wants to take away what I have earned and give it to those that won't do anything, I vote republican. A good speaker that makes you dream does not make you qualified to be President. If that were the case then you better look at all those Amway Diamonds that make you dream about what can be, as they take your money. "

" Whoa Kelly, get ahold of yourself...Barry Obama is a skilled orator, perhaps one of the finest in a generation. Unfortunately for him, it takes more than excellent speaking skills to lead our nation. When it comes to matters of substance he's nothing more than an empty suit. He speaks in vague platitudes about hope and change and while these are great "tag" lines they offer no depth. Reading under the "Issues" tab on his website there are few if any real specific policy ideas. What matters and should be considered seriously about Barry is who he associates himself with and specifically who is endorsing him in this race.

The Tony Rezko, William Ayers, Rev. Wright saga is well documented and there are real questions to be raised about these relationships.

You also have to ask yourself why people like Fidel Castro, Louis Farrakhan, Michael Klonsky, Daniel Ortega, Muammar Qadhafi, why on Obama’s own website does he tout the support of Marxists/Communists/Socialists (http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/group/MarxistsSocialistsCommunistsforObama), the Muslim American Society (Muslim Brotherhood), the New Black Panther Party, the Socialist Party USA, the Communist Party USA, the Communist Party of IL,…

Are none of these red flags? Should you not ask yourself why certain salacious people or groups are throwing their support behind this man.

Why are foreign nationals like Mosir, Hosam, and Osama Edwan, from Rafah a city in the Gaza Strip, shich just also happens to be a HAMAS strong hold, sending large donations to Obama's campaign? Look it up if you'd like: http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/can_ind/P80003338/3/E/

Use your common sense, ask real, tough, serious questions about this man…that’s all I’m saying. "

" When will the whining end from a few narrow minded Lincoln residents? Charlene Kalkwarf's claim that they have "no say" in the decision to move the State Fair (notice, it is the STATE Fair, not the Lincoln Fair) could not be farther from the truth. Lincoln residents had their say in the same manner that they speak on the majority of issues facing them--and that is through their elected representatives. The move of the State Fair and exciting beginning of the Research Park on the old state fair grounds was overwhelmingly supported by the Lincoln state senators, and the Lincoln city elected officials. They examine all side of the issues, listen to all of the their constituents, not just the whiners, and make their decisions. This was really a no brainer--it was win-win for everyone. A stagnant slowly dieing fair would get an exciting new beginning in the center of the state, and Lincoln would get an unbelievable addition to their economy with the Research Park.

So thankfully, the Charlene Kalkwarfs are a tiny minority that just wants to whine. Everyone else knows that progress for the fair and the research park is very, very exciting for Lincoln and for the state. "

Hey John wrote on September 4, 2008 8:28 am:
" What about McCain's more troubling past. The affairs he had while married to his first wife that caused an end to the marriage? His self-described lack of economics, his poor educational performance at the Naval Academy. What again is his great offering to the US voters? Maybe the suggestion that the conservative right has become more flexible with it's morals, such as cheating on one's wife, or accepting opening teen pregnancy in in the families of our abstinence teaching leaders? Why does the McCain-Palin ticket, which flies in the face of conservative values, suddenly seem so attractive? It's because the election is about winning, not about issues.
I seem to remeber a time when the Republicans walked the walk instead of just talking the talk. "

" The Lincoln senators did not listen to their constituents. All they listened to was the whining of the University and Harvey Perlman. Their research park will become another money pit and if you think taxes are bad now just wait. As for the fair I'll go where it goes. It's about the producers and the kids with their projects. The whiners can stay home and keep lamenting the loss or get on with the fair. Whine to your senators they sold you out for the University. You can't wait until after it is passed into law to become concerned about an issue. The LJS covered the idea from it's inception. The time to argue about thia and contact your representatives was before the vote not after-too little too late. Remember Class 1 schools and seatbelt laws-the legislature doesn't have to listen to the voters. "

No wonder he didn't stay with any one company or law firm for more than two years, in corporate America you have to offer more than just being present and collecting your paycheck. What an empty suit. "

The republican party has a record of giving breaks and loopholes to the wealthiest people and companys. Why would they give someone like exxon a 4 billion dollar tax loophole? Some of the people who are pro mccain were also pro bush. Look at what this fool has done to the economy. Borrow from china to give a pittance to the taxpayers in hopes of them spending it on foolish things. I spent my 600 dollars on catching up bills that the republican party influnces have caused. Mccain says middle class is 5 million and below huh? I got a surprise for him, I was middle class until bush ruined the economy. For you rich rich republicans, try making it on a fixed income. A vote for John McCain is a vote for a better, stronger, and richer America, no doubt about it. And after last nite's speech by Gov. Palin, the real change candidate, and party this election cycle are the republicans. What a breath of fresh air she brings to the table. "

The 'Readers Digest Verstion of his speech is "Government is too big, but we need to grow it." Government can't be everything to everyone. To quote Gerald Ford, "If the government is big enough to give you everything you want, it is big enough to take away everything you have." "

Negative attacks will divert attention from the real issues but still leave us waiting for answers. Instead of all the negative attacks, a little self-examination is in order, isn't it? "

Every time I read a post that says 'socialism', I just laugh. We live in an area where people like to repeat stuff they heard, and since it's four-syllables, they feel sophisticated.
This election is going to get voters out--that's exciting. People are interested and excited about a presidential election for once. It's easy to sit back and bash on people, but every time I read 'he says nothing of substance', I again think people heard that word somewhere, because saying someone has no substance is an empty statement in itself. Heck, they can claim to *be* anyone they want. Doesn't a group name like Communists and Socialists for Obama sound suspiciously 'convenient' to find on his website? Can you not imagine very easily that someone wanting to play dirty to hurt a candidate's campaign might set up a group named that, so that they can point to it and say 'Look!! Barack Obama is supported by Communists and Socialists!" ??

Just use your common sense, and ask yourself some serious questions about that. "

Pronunciation: \ˈsō-shə-ˌli-zəm\
Function: noun
Date: 1837
1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.

Obama wants universal healthcare (government controlled/sponsored), rich to pay more in taxes so that the welfare class can get a bigger check- (government distribution of goods). The notinon that what Obama wants doesn't resemble socialism is a farce, thus your argument is left inane. "

I guess that's true as long as you're not gay and want to be married, or a woman who wants an abortion. Then they certainly do want the government making decisions for you. Undoubtedly, the evidence shows that the Republicans believe in strong government control over personal lives -if you believe anything else, you're ignoring the facts. "

" Someone asks how we will pay for the things Obama wants to do. My question to those people is, how can we pay for what Bush has been doing, and what McCain wants to do? They want to spend, spend, spend without raising taxes, which sounds great to us as individuals, but will quickly bankrupt the country- deficit spending racking up debt will do nothing but hurt the country. If we spent the money we're wasting on this ridiculous illegal war in Iraq on things here at home to benefit our own country, we'd be able to pay for everything these candidates want and more. "

JM wrote on September 4, 2008 12:03 pm:
" So McCain/Palin will make us stronger- just how? By bullying countries around the globe into following what we want them to do as Bush as done and as McCain has discussed? By starting wars all around the globe to force our values on small countries, and sabre rattling at other countries we don't agree with to try to scare them into following what we want? That has been tried for the past 8 years and has been an utter disaster! To be strong you need not only the military might that is needed as a last resort at times, but also the intelligence to be able to think reasonably about every situation and to work the avenues of diplomacy. Take one example from last night- I don't remember if it was Palin or Giuliani that mentioned it, but they were bragging about how McCain stood up to Russia after their invasion of Georgia, standing firm demanding they leave, comparing it to a supposedly weak response Obama had in reference to discussing that both sides over there were to blame. Well guess what? Anybody who checks the facts of what happened would learn that both sides WERE to blame! Georgia started the fight by attacking Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia- killing several of them- which prompted Russia to move into South Ossetia to push Georgian troops out, and they proceeded to go deeper into Georgia as we all know. Yes, the final push deep into Georgia was uncalled for, but to see it as black and white in the old ways of the cold war and just chastise Russia as if they were just completely in the wrong, trying to annex territory, etc. is assinine and very simple minded. Not to mention, we have zero moral high ground to stand on when talking to Russia about this, because we invaded a sovereign nation in 2003, overthrew the government, and are still occupying it now. So tell us again, Mr. Mcain or Ms. Palin, why Russia should look at that and somehow still think what they are doing is wrong?
McCain/Palin constantly talk about this world being such a big bad, dangerous place- well guess what, with their tactics the world will continue to get more hostile towards the US, we need leadership who will restore alliances and stop the meddling that causes so much of the hatred. "

Those of you who grew up in that time, try to remember sons, brothers, fathers going to Vietnam to fight a horendous war. He went, not knowing if he would come back alive, as all did. You'd rather dwell on him cheating on his wife though and forget that he and others in the military kept your right to complain. "

" According to the non-partisan Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center, Obama's tax plan will not pay for all of his proposed programs but will, in fact, increase the projected National debt. On the other hand, according to the same source, McCain's tax plan will increase the National debt substantially (as in more than 40%) more than Obama's, and McCain offers nothing of value to the citizens of this country in exchange.

LMR - your right wing noise machine sources have misled you yet again. Obama sponsored 820 laws in Illinois, and authored 152 bills and co-sponsored 427 in Washington, including the 2007 Ethics Reform bill, something that self-described reformers McCain and Palin should applaud, not denigrate. "

In the "none of the above" selection we have this election, I will vote for McCain simply because of the attacks instantly coming from the media and Dem leadership on a female who actually has a set of family values and some leadership expierience. That act alone put me now on the side of McCain and Palin. So for me and many like me there is another choice, tell the media they are wrong and do not pick my President. You can like her, admire her, etc.... but that doesn't mean she is remotely ready for the possibility of being President. Is the name calling over at the convention so we can start to hear what the Republicans plan for solutions? I mean an actual plan on healthcare. We know they want to drill everywhere for oil, cut taxes for big corporations, spread our military thin in all parts of the world - "victory" - however undefined, is all that matters. The cost - emotionally, financially, internationally, and in American lives - is not consequential - as long as we can say we "may" be victorious (again undefined). But what I see out here on Midwestern streets is not what I see and hear when I add it all up. I am disappointed, dismayed, and even outright ashamed of the way our country has been lead since I can remember being aware of a world larger than the West A neighborhood.

Our leadership, and by association, WE, have been irresponsible. The size of the national debt astounds me; I recently watched a documentary that claimed each family's share of the national debt is around $90,000, and climbing. This is out of control. Scream about lowering taxes all you'd like, but this has to stop. Taxes cannot continue to be lowered, and we cannot continue to spend money on things we don't need. We'll disagree on what the country "needs" and what it does not, but I, and my children, and their children, should not owe hundreds of thousands of dollars apiece to foreign debtors.

We have been hypocrites. We signed on to the Geneva Conventions, until someone decided it might serve our interests better to break them. What right do we have to hold anyone else to a standard higher than the standard to which we hold ourselves?

We have been cruel, we have been greedy, we have been ignorant, we have been bullies.

I love my home, but I cannot be proud of those things. From what I observe in my day to day life, we are better than this. And I care enough to want to make it so.

So don't tell me I don't love my country enough because I won't wear flags plastered all over my body. Don't tell me I'm not a patriot because I don't blindly support everything every public official does and says.

I suspect Barack Obama is neither the savior nor the anti-Christ. But having considered the two candidates and their positions and proposals, I think he is more likely than John McCain to lead the country in a direction that I will be proud of. "

If whether or not he used a teleprompter is all your worried about, then we ARE hosed because you obviously don't have your head on straight! "

He seems blissfully unaware that GERMANY DECLARED WAR on us. The poster "Hey Josh" further writes: "What's illegal about going to war with a country that kept breaking UN resolution after UN resolution?" His type never cease to amaze me. They NEVER miss an opportunity to vilify and mock the UN, yet they hang their argument for the illegal invasion of Iraq on the same entity they crave to see kicked out of the United States. Oh, and if they really wanted to be consistent, Israel is in violation of many more UN resolutions. When do we invade? "

But, one of these days I wish the die-hard republicans would wake up and realize voting for a democrat isn't treason....and might actually be better for the country. Come on Nebraska....let's join the rest of the country and be open to different ideas. "

" Here are a few facts for you "tax the rich!" folks out there.

In 2002 the latest year of available data, the top 5 percent of taxpayers paid more than one-half (53.8 percent) of all individual income taxes, but reported roughly one-third (30.6 percent) of income.

The top 1 percent of taxpayers paid 33.7 percent of all individual income taxes in 2002. This group of taxpayers has paid more than 30 percent of individual income taxes since 1995. Moreover, since 1990 this group’s tax share has grown faster than their income share.

Taxpayers who rank in the top 50 percent of taxpayers by income pay virtually all individual income taxes.

What does this all mean? We already do tax the rich! We are already redistributing the wealth. How much more is needed?! When will enough be enough? I truly believe that some people will not be happy until NOBODY else makes more than they do. There are certainly more than a few statements in today's comments that support that notion. "

He directed at his target audience, saying what they want to hear, and how they want to hear it, it does not surprise me that his speech "inspired" those who it was directed at. Now how does that speech effect the remainder of America who doubts the message and the messenger? Jesus and Mohammad both directed thier message to the masses in a simular way to further thier goals, and as many on the left state here daily religion and government does not mix. I do not feel that Obama is anything special in the world of politics, just trolling for votes using a tried and true methodology. Watching the Palin speech last night was no differant, directed, as well as can be expected from McCain tonight, so what are we to believe and who are we to believe. Faith and trust is more than saying what we want to hear, and how we want to hear it. I too await the debates, not this scripted speech cycle. And I too am no longer pleased in the fact that the media is in effect picking the President based on thier representation of thier selected candidate, Obama. My mind will be made up when I close the curtian, taking in all the information, and yes, picking the lesser of the evils presented to that point. "

1: Obama voted for the bill that gave Exxon tax breaks, McCain did not.
2. I believe that when Jesus instructs us to feed the poor etc he is speaking to us as individuals, not as government. i.e. the good Samaritan did not ask the govt to take care of the injured man, HE did it and he cared for him until he was able to care for himself.
3. I read a piece in the Chicago Sun-Times about all those "bills" Obama sponsored in the Ill legislature. According to this story, others worked on the bills until they were ready to be voted on and then Emil Jones said "Hey we need to get Obama's name on this." My question is if Obama did all this work in Il leg where are the records? As a lawyer I'm sure he is aware of the importance of keeping accurate documentation. He has said he didn't keep them. " 2006 data is already available (check the US Census or Treasury Departments sometime). In 2006, the richest 10% of Americans collected 48% of all income earned by individuals. They paid only 41% of the individual income taxes!
But more importantly, 66% of all corporations MAKING A PROFIT, paid NO corporate income taxes!!! The AVERAGE tax on an American corporation now sits at about 6%!!! While GOPers like to proclaim our tax RATES are higher than Europes, they cite the statutory rates on the book but ignore the actual rates they pay, which are only a fraction of what they might pay.

What I've heard thus far from the GOP convention...They're great at insults, sneers, making fun (of vets 4yrs ago, of community workers and helpers this year)...But I'm still waiting to hear their plans for things...Economy? Healthcare? Getting out of Iraq? Housing and banking collapse? Didn't the GOP used to claim they were the party of ideas? Seems like their only idea this year is how best to make fun of Obama, and then scream "Liberal bias, I'm a POW" whenever anyone asks them what they really intend to do if they win! "

How's it going at school he asked, Just great dad, I'm on the honor roll and am graduating at the top of my class. After congradulating her, he asked about a neighbors daughter. Well dad, all she does is party, never gets good gradees and is failing miserably. Well then, dad said, why don't we lower your grades and add that to hers so she can pass? The daughter replied, not in my lifetime, I worked too hard to get where I am and her father replied,,,now you are thnking like a Republican. "

Those are to be individual gifts, not government gifts. You are to give from your heart, not because Washington forces you to. It is well documented that when people have more of their own money and less government sponsored programs that people generously take care of others. If you look at US history you will find that this is what occurred before the welfare state. We need less government so we can get back to this. "

Raise sales taxes (now 10.25%), increase the real estate transfer tax by 40%, sold the Chicago Skyway toll road to Austrailian investors, and they are now they are trying to sell Midway Airport. What about the State? They are looking to create a brand new level of franchise tax on all business in order to pay off all of their contractor friends. This is where Obama is from.
