The Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation political action committee has endorsed Mike Johanns for U.S. Senate.

Johanns is seeking the seat being vacated by Chuck Hagel. His Democratic opponent is Scott Kleeb.

The Farm Bureau is the state’s largest voluntary agriculture organization.

Johanns joined Nebraska Farm Bureau President Keith Olsen at press conferences at family farms in Firth and Hastings to announce the endorsement on Thursday.

“Mike Johanns understands that good agricultural policy is more than just providing a critical safety net for agricultural producers, which he did in his Farm Bill proposal,” said Nebraska Farm Bureau First Vice President Steve Nelson.

“He understands that for agriculture in Nebraska to succeed, we also need a comprehensive energy policy, we need good trade policy and we need to keep the tax burden low.”

" He could have helped you a lot more in his last job, why do you think he will do something for you now. Just a big quiter "

" Really? I mean he advised the president to veto the farm bill, left in the middle of the farm bill, so this is surprising. I wonder if their members are all behind Johanns or is it just more old school politics. "

" I dropped my farm bureau membership and insurance today. One of these years the Bureau will really be concerned about who they endorse. Johanns has never been a friend of agriculture unless there is something for him to gain, usually votes when he is seeking his next job. "

" The state FB may say this is their first fed endorsement, but the national always endorses. I just looked at their list from last cycle (109th Congress). Out of 260 endorsed, only 30 were Democrats. They've always been a Republican organization, only supporting Dems where it's absolutely necessary. Mike Johanns was seen kissing up to them at the debate at the state fair, and after his appalling performance at it, the fact they still endorsed him shows they really didn't think about it. "
