COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Pottwattamie County supervisors have voted to stay out of two lawsuits involving the construction of a casino in Carter Lake by the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska.

The board voted 4-0 on Wednesday against joining the Iowa attorney general or Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning in separate federal lawsuits. Both lawsuits challenge the National Indian Gaming Commission’s approval of a gaming ordinance submitted by the tribe.

Nebraska doesn’t permit gambling, but Iowa does, and under federal law Native tribes may offer gambling that is legal in a state where the tribe owns land.

Nebraska officials contend that Carter Lake is a geographic oddity because it is on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River and that Nebraska has the legal right to sue. Iowa officials are worried that the Ponca tribe won’t be required to pay gambling taxes.

" Pottawattamie will love to have another casino. They get all the "advantages" of and Nebraska will get all the "disadvantages" of it. Carter Lake has always been a slum of Council Bluffs which they didn't have to look at. "

" Nebraska has an interesting argument there. Perhaps Wisconsin should try to take over governing Northern Michigan as it's a “geographic oddity” in that it's on their side of Lake Michigan.
Sounds like nonsense? Bingo!
More time and effort being wasted by your Attorney General. "

" let them build the casino and do busy there omaha just crosses the river to play any how and this will help the indians improve there living so it is not hurting anyone for anyone who says it will cause more problems are not looking far it is just across the river with two bridges and you are at one any way. this land is in Iowa and not in nebraska so get off ot it and worry about problems in Nebraska "

" Let them build the casino. IT will mean once again that Nebraska money is going to improve things in Iowa. I wonder if the government of Nebraska ever realize the amount of money that leaves this state every year to help Iowa. What could Neraska do with that money if we has casino's here. I know all the bad things we hear about, but you know we have them here now, and we have every form of gambling but casino's. "

" So when do you suppose Forrest Bruning is going to "get it"? If the idea is to get press coverage, then it is backfiring because even the most backward simpleton can see that this whole effort is totally without any merit whatsoever. I cannot believe that Nebraska has an attorney general that is this clueless. "
