Tuesday night, nearly 50,000 people slept in American Red Cross shelters set up in 11 states near the Gulf Coast.

Ken and Mary Alice Jones, a Lincoln husband-and-wife team of Red Cross volunteers, will go to Baton Rouge, La., today to join more than 4,000 volunteers already in the area helping those affected by Hurricane Gustav.

The Joneses, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, have volunteered before on national disasters, though this will be their first hurricane disaster operation.

Before Gustav, the Joneses helped residents affected by flooding and tornadoes, including those in Coffeyville, Kan., and Rochester, Minn., in 2007. During Hurricane Katrina, they staffed a Red Cross call center in Omaha, helping Gulf Coast residents find assistance or pointing them to the nearest Red Cross shelter. They then returned to Lincoln to help train a new crop of volunteers.

Ken Jones said working as Red Cross volunteers is just in their nature.

“We care about people and so we want to help when there’s a disaster,” he said. “We want to go assist the residents of Louisiana who just suffered loss and have been dislocated from their homes.”

He and his wife also are active locally as members of the Disaster Action Team of the Cornhusker Regional Chapter in Lincoln. They also train new volunteers in sheltering, mass care and more.

" Coming from a survivor of a natural disaster THANK YOU Mr. and Mrs. Jones. The Red Cross and the many volunteers changed my life 4 years ago. I truly believe in and support the Red Cross. During these times I wish everyone would support the Red Cross, if each person in Lincoln would give just $1.00 per month you'd be looking at approx. $250,000.00 each month for them to reach out an help other people like they did me and my family.
Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Bless you! Please understand that each and every person you reach out to will remember the two of you for the rest of their lives. YOU DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
Be safe! God Bless! and Thank you!!! "

" I am currently in the Baton Rouge area right now. And as much as the extra help is appriecated, I honestly don't know what you can do. As of today, 70% of the businesses are out of power, so where will you stay? Where will you eat? The grocery stores have no perishables, the majority of people don't have power (about 90%) and gas is running very low. Not many people have been displaced, just have no power and running short on supplies. Is that what these volunteers will be doing? Passing out supplies? How can they help other than that? "
