Bono and his merry band of Dublinites are hitting Lincoln Grand Theatre’s big screen Friday in the concert film “U2 3D,” a 3D presentation of the band’s global “Vertigo” tour.

The production employed the greatest number of 3D cameras ever used for one movie, and a few critics have said the film’s ... well ... even better than the real thing.

But this is a film that first opened way back in January. Why did it take so long to get to Lincoln?

Well, the Grand Theatre just recently got what it needed to present 3D films. In July, after the release of the family adventure film “Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D,” Marcus Theatres installed 3D systems in 12 markets, including Lincoln.

So, now that it finally can, the Grand’s playing Bono and Co. in all their three-dimensional swagger.

The 3D system includes a new digital projector, which plays a hard drive instead of a film reel, and hundreds of pairs of 3D glasses, which are washed and sanitized between screenings.

Because of the additional service cost of presenting a 3D movie, ticket prices are a little higher than with a 2D feature. Matinees prices for “U2 3D” are $9.50 for adults, $8.50 for children; night shows are $11.50 for adults, $8.50 for children. But prices will vary from 3D movie to 3D movie.

“A lot of 3D films are in the pipeline for us,” said Carlo Petrick, communications manager for Marcus Theatres.

The next big 3D film this year will be “Bolt,” Disney’s computer-animated story of a dog movie star who goes hero, which opens Nov. 21. Also slated for the silver screen this season is a 3D re-release of Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” which opens Oct. 24.

Other 3D films on the horizon include the horror film “My Bloody Valentine in 3D,” the new Pixar film “Up,” the next “Ice Age” movie, the next “Final Destination” movie and a 3D re-release of “Toy Story.”

" I'm perhaps a bit biased because I'm a huge U2 fan, but this film is worth it. The SFX are some of the most incredible I've ever seen on 3D. Especially for The Fly...it's Zoo TV on acid. "

" Saw U23D in Seattle this past winter ... in the film, Bono does these reaching out moves that in 3D look like he's almost touching your face. It's waaay cool. "

" This is one of the best concert films I've ever seen. U2 performs new arrangements of both old and new material and it's simply amazing from start to finish. Well worth the money. Don't miss it if you've ever enjoyed anything from U2. "
