No shortage of big plays in Southwest win over Fremont
BY BRENT C. WAGNER / Lincoln Journal Star
Lincoln Southwest’s Jordan Tyrance appeared to be headed for a score on a long reception up the middle late in the first quarter Friday. But the Lincoln Southwest junior ran out of steam and came up 10 yards short.
Tyrance got another chance in the third quarter, going up to haul in a 40-yard touchdown pass to finish off Southwest's 33-0 victory against Fremont on Friday at Seacrest Field.
His new teammates were giving him a hard time for not scoring earlier.
The 6-foot-4 Tyrance made up for it when he hauled in the 40-yarder in single coverage on a corner route.
“It was exciting,” Tyrance said. “I think coach might say something about running around a little too much afterward.”
Playing for the Silver Hawks for the first time after spending his first two years at Parkview Christian, Tyrance led all receivers with two catches for 110 yards.
It was fun competing at the top level, Tyrance said. Asked how Class A differs from the eight-man game he came from, Tyrance’s eyes got big.
“It's faster," he said, "and guys are stronger. Everything has to be that much faster and crisper."
The Class A ninth-ranked Silver Hawks controlled their season opener with big gains instead of marching up and down the field. Among Southwest’s big plays:
* Kyle Daniels took the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.
* Tyrance's 70-yard catch set up the second score, a 10-yard run by QB Rylan Cotton.
* Dylan Payne's 38-yard catch set up the third score, a short run by Jeff Seybold.
* Ethan Tompkins had a 54-yard touchdown catch late in the second quarter
Cotton was 6-for-9 passing for 231 yards, and Southwest showed it might have more balance to its offense this season.
"We got some good athletes that are capable of making big plays," Southwest coach Mark King said.
Things weren't nearly as perfect as the scoreboard showed, though. With some busted plays figured in, Southwest rushed for only 76 yards. And the special teams need some work.
But Fremont never threatened. Linebackers Ben Samani and Daniels were the guys who made most of the big plays on defense, King said.
