Grant boy recovers from E. coli
By The Associated Press
NORTH PLATTE — A 2-year-old southwest Nebraska boy is slowly recovering after a bout with E. coli.
Jason Wykert, of Grant, was stricken earlier this month. His parents, Jessica and Kraig Wykert, took their son to a hospital in Grant on Aug. 10. He was sent to a hospital in North Platte. Doctors then made a decision to transferred the boy to Children’s Hospital in Denver on Aug. 14.
The Nebraska Department of Health is investigating the case.
In the past four years, there have been five cases of E. coli in Perkins County.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that E. coli sickens about 73,000 people and kills 61 each year in the United States. Most of those who die have weak immune systems, such as the elderly or very young.
