When it takes the field today, the 290-member Cornhusker Marching Band will sport new uniforms for the first time in many years.

About 325 uniforms were ordered and paid for by the University of Nebraska Foundation, said band director Anthony Falcone. He believes they replace uniforms made in 1979.

Workers at the Fruhauf Uniforms Inc. factory in Wichita, Kan., spent hundreds of hours making the new uniforms.

They used 1,170 yards of scarlet fabric, 705 yards of white fabric, 270 yards of white polyester and 160 yards of gold luster, along with 3,250 gold livery buttons and 650 large letter “Ns.”

Each uniform consists of seven individual pieces: Jacket, cape, trousers, baldric, two gauntlets and hat.

This year’s band includes students from nearly every region of the country, but 80 percent of the students are from Nebraska.

About 25 percent of the students are music or music education majors. The rest are studying in more than 70 other degree programs.

Each band member passed two auditions to earn a place in the band.

The drum majors for the 2008 marching band are senior Douglas Bogatz and junior Jessica Thacker of Omaha and senior Chris Watson of Lincoln. The twirlers are juniors Emily Brinton of Lincoln and Jennifer Curtis of Papillion.
