Letters, 8/29: Pickens’ plan falls short

T. Boone Pickens is correct to push for a plan to free America from foreign oil, but he fails. First, his plan only goes partway to reduce foreign oil costs from $700 billion to $400 billon. Second, his plan is good for only 20 or 30 years; he doesn’t want to consider hydrogen even though hydrogen fueling stations are being built in the western United States. Third, he wants to abandon the infrastructure that has been built to supply natural gas to electric companies and replace it with wind power — a power source that is not always available and requires an expensive infrastructure to get the power from the windmills to the East and West Coasts.

An alternative would be to continue to use the current natural gas fields for electricity and take the vast quantity of newly discovered natural gas and use it to fuel trucks, etc. The new gas fields like the one in Northwest Louisiana (fourth-largest in the world) should be able to provide fuel for trucks plus many other uses that currently rely on oil. Another example would be to heat homes in the northeast United States with gas from the new field in Appalachia.

Next, build the windmills to generate the electricity. However, instead of building an expensive infrastructure, use the electricity to make hydrogen and transport the hydrogen. This hydrogen would be used to fuel cars.

This plan should reduce our dependence on foreign oil much more than just $300 billion, even though it may take another 10 years. We also need to look to other sources like conservation, solar, biofuels, nuclear, or drilling in currently restricted areas.

Attack on gays unfair

I am writing in response to Dorothy Westphal’s (LJS, Aug. 25) accusatory approach to homosexuality and homosexual marriage. As far as the religious soap-box attack on homosexuality goes, you really need to sit down and compare the separate sects of Christianity.

Although Catholics shun homosexual behavior, they live by the testament of “hate the sin, not the sinner.” However, several other religious organizations accept homosexuality. The Bible has long been controversial and has been tweaked over the years. To compare the texts, you will find they differ greatly.

The biggest issue I have with the letter is the misconception of the source and cause of HIV and AIDS. This has been perceived as a homosexual disease. In fact, the first known case of AIDS was discovered in Africa. In the 1980s it was first discovered in the United States in both gay men and frequent drug users. Sex of any nature is not the only form of transfer.

Concerns about Democrats

There are deep concerns for our country if the Democratic candidate for president is elected.

First, the killing of our unborn could become law. Barack Obama promised Planned Parenthood in a speech July 17, 2007, that “the first thing I’d do as president is, is sign the Freedom of Choice Act.” As a co-sponsor of this bill, he has promised Planned Parenthood and other pro-choice groups that he can be counted on to “end the abortion wars.” To him that means allowing abortion-on-demand without any restrictions nationwide.

Then there’s the challenge to our cherished right-to-work laws. Big Labor is pumping millions into this presidential campaign. The AFL-CIO has launched a $53 million effort to keep John McCain from being president. The Teamsters officials endorsed Obama after he said he supported examining the strict federal oversight imposed on their union because of its notorious corruption. Another goal of Big Labor is to repeal Section 14(b) of the Taft Hartley Act, which guarantees our right to work without having to join a labor union. And since the Democratic Party and Big Labor have a hand-in-glove relationship, our right-to-work laws could be in real jeopardy.

A couple years ago, the state of Indiana lost a large Colgate plant because the company wanted to move to a right-to-work state. A note of interest: Personal income is higher in right-to-work states than in those without. States controlled by Big Labor are losing populations to right-to-work states. Companies want to be in right-to-work states.

" Isn't abortion already legal? I always thought that conservatives were for less government (except when they can make money off of it, i.e. Dick Cheney et co. and the Iraq invasion). Seems that Phyllis wants the government into every part of her life. Roe vs. Wade is a broad ruling and abortion is only a small part of it. Over turning that ruling can actually open up a new situation of government control of our personal lives, not just ending with abortion. How bizarre that people are so concerned that the non-traditional candidate will change so much! G.W. Bush and 6 years of Republican majorities in Congress should have been enough to change the abortion laws, but the couldn't, or more likely chose not to (abortion is too good of a campaign issue to get rid of it). Doesn't seem like all that much can change, even if an Obama presidency wanted too. It's a non-issue but it gets peoples emotional blood a boiling, doesn't it? "

" How about using switchgrass and other hybrid grasses to power the electrical plants. They have been doing this in Europe for several years. "

" He also said “Choice is about how we lead our lives. It’s about our families and about our communities. It’s about our daughters and whether they’re going to have the same opportunities as our sons. There are those who want us to believe otherwise. They want us to believe that there’s nothing that unites us as Americans—there’s only what divides us. They’ll seek out the narrowest and most divisive ground. That is the strategy—to always argue small instead of looking at the big picture.”

I’m against abortion as a form of birth control, but if you want abortion to end, then start allowing sexual and reproductive age based education. "

" How foolish are the people that think they will end abortion by making it illegal? There were millions of abortions before Roe v. Wade, only they were illegal and dangerous. Doctors risked their careers to help women make extremely personal and difficult decisions. Or it was self-aborted at home, with or without the male's help, ending in a forced miscarriage. Abortions have unfortunately been around as long as pregnancy. Maybe we should be focusing more on stopping unwanted PREGNANCY so we don't have the option of an abortion by focusing on teaching contraception techniques including abstaining AND condom use. Maybe we should not be so afraid of sex that we can not teach our children the reality of sex so they enter into a curious world with half of the knowledge they need to be safe and protect themselves. We don't do nearly the job we need to educate the public about how to avoid the need or possibility for abortion but we punish them for making foolish mistakes. Was it their fault, or the teacher's? "

" Wake up Phyllis. McCain is also Pro-Choice. I guess you will be staying home from the November elections.

The right-to-work issue would not have near the impact you portray. You also forgot to mention that Obama wants to remove subsidies and tax breaks for companies that out-source jobs overseas to bring them back to the US. The Democrats are proposing many changes to improve the situation for the working middle class. Which is something Republicans could care less about. "

" Now I know I will vote for him. I like both of those reasons. Right to work states rip off workers. That is why big business loves to move to those states. Cheat the worker without fear of repriasal. Women should be allowed to make a choice, fetus rights is not in the Constitution. "

JohnR wrote on August 29, 2008 9:55 am:
" Phyllis - the Freedom of Choice act would return honesty to medicine (currently being denied freedom of speech by the Reagan/Bush Gag Rule), and allow adults to make medical decisions for themselves without gov't interference (something conservatives claim to support anytime the subject of single-payor national health insurance arises). The Big Labor corruption? That was 20-30 years ago, and is the opposite of what the GOP demand for supervision/regulation of Big Business corruption (which means, they support NO regulation or supervision of Corporate America, dispite far more costly and recent corruption than Big Labor! Or have you already forgotten Enron, the S&L collapses, and the current housing/financial collapse?). Obama also believes returning the Department of Labor to actually looking out for Labor, instead of working to make American workers little more than serfs (under Bush, DOL has literally taken the supporting position of Corporate America on EVERY issue).
And Phyllis, just 3 years ago Alabama and Georgia lost Toyota and Honda assembly plants, along with over 10,000 jobs, because they didn't have a union, didn't have national healthcare, and lacked a sufficiently educated workforce! Or so said Toyota and Honda. In both cases, the plants were built in Canada, largely BECAUSE they have easy-to-negotiate with unions and a gov't supplied healthcare system that standardized (and equalized) the cost of healthcare! Indeed, there are now more than 100 major American corporations who support some form of national healthcare BECAUSE, they say, lack of such programs make US industry UNCOMPETITIVE in the global marketplace! "

" Phillis - First of all, abortion is already legal. Google "Roe v. Wade" if you have any questions on that.

Second, you indicate Obama said he can be "counted on to “end the abortion wars.” To him that means allowing abortion-on-demand without any restrictions nationwide."

That statement is 180 degrees from this direct quote from Obama: "The goal right now should be — and this is where I think we can find common ground and by the way I have now inserted this into the democrat party platform is how do we reduce the number of abortions because the fact is that although we’ve had a president who is opposed to abortions over the last eight years, abortions have not gone down." Zoomie wrote on August 29, 2008 10:26 am:
" So...apparently the GOP are admitting experience really DOESN'T matter!!!

McCain's choice for VP is Sarah Palin, governor of AK for less than 2yrs, preceeded by a few years as mayor of Fairbanks, I believe...That's it!!!
And before anyone says there's a difference between being the Presidential candidate vs the VP candidate, let me remind you that (a) its the GOP who've been claiming the choice of Biden shows "same old", because they claim the VP DOES matter, and (b) McCain will be 73 when sworn in (oldest President every, I believe) and has already outlived his father and grandfather who both died suddenly of heart attacks in their 60s (meaning she is far more likely to have to take the office, with no experience, than will Biden...who DOES have decades of experience)!
Seems to make many of the GOP attacks on the Democrats seem...phoney!

Oh, and Phyllis - "Big Labor" now accounts for only 8% of American workers! Hardly all that "Big", and with far less money or power than Corporate America! So if you're really concerned about corruption, perhaps you should be looking at the other end of the employer-employee negotiating table! "

Charles Jones wrote on August 29, 2008 10:28 am:
" Repulicans are a strange lot. They want to have freedom to carry any kind of weapon anywhere they like; well, except the NRA convention, where weapons were not allowed. And they seem to believe that anyone who doesn't agree is unAmerican and doesn't understand the Constitution. But when it comes to same sex marriage and homosexuality they have a different take. They think they should be able to dictate their beliefs on the rest of us. Same sex marriage doesn't undermine the sanctity of marriage; divorce, failure to support financailly and emotionally the spouse and children and adultery are the prime destroyers of marriage. But they, republicans, have long used these hot button issues to get the working men and women to vote for them. I agree, they do not intend to change the laws, for they have won too many elections on lies and half truths. The same folks who demean any protections for the working class have no problem with tax cuts and subsidies to large corporations and the wealthy. I only wonder when the working class will wake up and realize Republicans have only their own selfish interests at heart, and care not for most of the population. Bush, Cheney and their administration are good examples of selfishness taken to a new level, all at the expense of this nations treasurey and security. You Bush supporters need to take a real good look at yourselves!

" In response to Phyllis Roehl, I must ask that you respect my privacy. This is a personal issue that is quite frankly and bluntly put.Is NONE of your business. If I choose to have children. or not have children is and I must repeat it is NONE of your business.

My body is my own and it does not belong to you, nor to any other agency.
If I choose to use birth-control,considered by some to be an abortion,or if I become pregnant by accident and choose to have an abortion. This is a decision that is between my doctor and myself. YOU are not involved. and it is NONE of your business.

Keep your nose where it belongs your own business.

Now, more than ever we need to strengthen the laws of Privacy, and Separation of Church and State. Privacy is a basic right of every human being. "
