FREMONT — Some residents in Fremont are moving ahead with a plan for a special election on a proposal targeting illegal immigrants.

Residents have gotten approval from City Clerk Kim Volk to circulate a petition to force a special election on a proposal to prohibit the harboring of — including renting to — and hiring illegal immigrants.

City Attorney Dean Skokan says the petition is similar to a proposed ordinance that failed to win City Council approval last month.

Petition organizers had to get approval from the city clerk before circulating the petition.

" Bravo! It's about time people started standing up for their country. I wish we could get something like that going in Lincoln. "

" I guess we will see whether the citizens of Fremont were correctly represented or not by their local government. "

" What is the mentality of a person that would knowingly or intentionally seek a way for a city to be sued. This is what that ordinance in any form would do. The City of Fremont would be sued. The residents of Fremont would be held liable. Liability means the homeowners would be forced to pay higher taxes in the form of Property taxes to pay for these lawsuits.
This is the province of the Federal government if you have complaints take it up with them. "

" in general is good for the economy. You can look at what some countries in Europe are going through with declining population. The long term effects is going to be a declining economy.

That said, lets get them into the system so they are paying their fair share of the taxes too! "

" I wish I lived in Fremont. I would vote for this whether or not the city was sued for it. If the city were sued, maybe they'd take the complaint up the ladder and eventually someone (the Feds?) will listen. I wish Lincoln would do the same! "

" thats what crete needs along withseveral other communities in the u.s. get rid of the illegals it's not that americans won't do the jobs it's just that these places hire illegals at cut rate wages and little or no benefits which are undeserving anyway if illegal but it drives down wages and benefits for the legal citizens. and if you think that these companies are hiring illegal workers to keep cost down so they can pass it along to the consumers you are very sadly mistaken it is only to increase there profits whether right or wrong. those that hire and rent to or harbor illegals should be prosecuted and punished if guilty with a severe enough penalty that it will make others reconsider doing the same.anddon't start throwing the illegals children up and saying they are being punished because we want to enforce the laws of illegal immagration it is the illegals that don't think enough of their own children to do things the legal way and not break the laws of the united states of america. but some will try to turn it around and try to make us the monsters. so maybe everyone who oposes enforcing laws againstillegals should take them into their own homes and family and take care of them at their own expense "

" Good for them. Just this week 600 illegal's were picked up in Mississippi. People use the tired remark "they're only doing jobs that our people wouldn't do". The firm that hired them was an electrical firm that made anything from transformers to medical supplies. Those jobs sound like jobs anyone would want. Why can't we make it harder for illegals to take our jobs, our towns. "

" We are becoming another Germany! History repeats itself.
Just give those people and opportunity, make them legal and give them a chance to be productive so they can feed their families. I feel for the children. This kind of issues bring division in this country. "

" The federal govt does NOT have the necessary resources to enforce immigration law. It is the right of any govt entity to pass and enforce any laws necessary to protect the community. This is not racism. Anyone who applies to lease a house or apartment is subject to a credit check. Anyone who applies for a job or a loan also goes through a credit check. Is this being racist??? You can call this victimless crime until an illegal alien starts using your name and social security number. Good luck with the SSA and the IRS and clearing up your credit history/rating.
Any reference to this being like Germany is lunacy. We are not deporting and murdering millions of innocent residents when we take steps to reduce the illegal alien population and activity. This country need to systematically stop making it easy for an illegal alien to work and reside here. "
