Nebraska officials estimate that the state’s unemployment rate increased slightly in July to 3.4 percent.

That’s a tenth of a point higher than the rate for June and three-tenths of a point higher than July 2007.

The Nebraska Department of Labor said Friday that the national figure for July 2008 increased to 5.7 percent. That’s two-tenths of a point higher than June’s rate and a full point higher than the July 2007 rate.

Nonmetropolitan labor market areas’ nonseasonally adjusted unemployment rates for July, followed by the June rates:
  • Market area: July/June
  • Beatrice: 5.4/4.5
  • Columbus: 2.9/2.9
  • Fremont: 3.6/3.6
  • Grand Island: 3.3/3.1
  • Hastings: 3.3/3.3
  • Kearney: 2.6/2.5
  • Lexington: 7.0/4.0
  • Norfolk: 3.1/3.2
  • North Platte: 3.1/3.0
  • Red Willow: 3.8/3.7
  • Scotts Bluff: 3.2/3.1

The department also said that in July there were 9,263 more jobs in Nebraska than in July 2007. The top three private growth sectors were professional and business services; trade, transportation and utilities; leisure and hospitality.

The state labor force numbered 992,544 in July. That’s down 2,439 from June, but 6,471 higher than July 2007.

For Lincoln, the unemployment rate increased a tenth of a point, to 3.3 percent from June’s figure. The July figure is also a tenth of a point above the July 2007 rate of 3.2 percent.

For Omaha, the July rate remained at 3.8 percent — up a tenth of a point from the July 2007 rate of 3.7 percent.

Omaha and Lincoln unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted and are not compared with the state unemployment rate.
