Two-a-days: David City and District C1-6

A closer look
DAVID CITY
The parents in David City began looking to this season several years ago.
This year’s seniors took their lumps when several started as freshmen. Guys like Travis Worm and Tyler Papa. Others gained experience along the way.
Really, though, David City began to turn the corner last season. After losing its first three games, David City won five straight to reach the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Bishop Neumann ended the Scouts’ season in the opening round of the playoffs.
“We were 0-3, and it was like, ‘Here we go again,’” coach Cortney Couch said. “The guys showed a lot of character to turn it around.
“That was thrilling, but yet we were a little disappointed. We thought maybe we could have won some of those early games and gotten a better seed for the playoffs.”
Now is the perfect time for David City to take the next step, Couch said. Nine starters return on each side of the ball. The depth is good, with 49 players in the program.
The seniors were freshmen during Couch’s first season as head coach and everybody is on the same page.
“We had a good team last year, but we want to have a good program,” Couch said. “There are teams in Class C-1 that are good every year no matter what they lose — teams like Pierce and Boone Central and Bishop Neumann — you can pencil them in every year.
“We want to get closer to those teams.”
District C1-6
OUTLOOK
This is a district that lacked parity last season, but with some of the players lost to graduation, could be more open this season.
Boone Central has only one starter back on offense from a good team, but tight end/defensive end Kalvin Zoucha is a good one to build around as the Cardinals look to keep their run of playoff trips going.
Columbus Scotus looks tough, and features eight guys on offense and nine on defense that have been starters.
Centennial remains a work in progress but has a few more experienced players. Madison is another team that could make a jump.
PLAYMAKERS
* Centennial quarterback Kendall Kucera and wide receiver Tyler Wullenwaber were a pretty good duo last season.
* David City linebacker Lucas Kastle can be a pest.
* Drew Wagner rushed for 1,300 yards last season for Madison.
* Twin River quarterback Mark Peterson and wide receiver Dustin Graham might be able to hook up enough to get the Titans some more wins.
COACHES’ PROJECTON (2007 record)
1. Boone Central (9-2); 2. Columbus Scotus (6-4); 3. David City (5-4); 4. Madison (4-4); 5. Centennial (0-8); 6. Twin River (1-7).
