A Lancaster County judge sentenced a 35-year-old Lincoln man to five to eight years in prison for stealing keys from a man’s pocket outside of church, then stealing his car to burglarize his home.

Larry Wellington Carter was convicted of the burglary. Judge Jodi Nelson sentenced him Tuesday.

On Jan. 6., outside the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Carter allegedly stole a set of car keys from a Lincoln man’s pocket.

Police said he drove the victim’s 2004 Cadillac to the man’s residence, near the 3400 block of Cape Charles West Road, and stole $41,000 worth of goods from it. The car was found near the 1700 block of C Street.

A day later, Carter went into the Al-Noor general store on 11th and B streets and sold a Dell Inspiron computer for $125, police said. The clerk later called police, who confirmed it had been stolen from the Lincoln residence. Police arrested Carter after he returned to the store later that week.

Nelson previously sentenced Carter’s co-defendant, Michael Robert Aguilar, 34, to five to eight years in prison.

" So this guy gets 5-8 years in prison for burglary.....yesterday in the paper a guy got 1 year for crashing a party then putting a man's head on the curb and kicking him repeatedly. What is the matter here? Is this man's burglary 5-8 times worse than trying to kill someone? "

" The guy who got one year was only charged with a misdemeanor, meaning the max he could get was one year. This dude was charged with a felony and faced one to twenty years. If anything was wrong here, it was how the assault guy was charged. "
