Letters, 8/25: Enough is enough!
Our family moved here from the East Coast four years ago. Lincoln is a great place to live and raise a family. Its safety, parks and schools have much to offer the community.
In comparing our move, we noticed right away that Lincoln’s property tax was much higher than what we were paying back home. Our West Virginia property on the fringe of the city was just more than three acres compared to living on a typical lot size within Lincoln. Adjusting to smaller land was easy, but it wasn’t that way with paying higher property taxes, about $500 a year there compared with close to $4,000 here.
We justified the higher property tax expense as a cost of living within the city, good schools, roads and recreational parks and trails. What we are having trouble understanding is that for every year but one our property tax has increased. We were not prepared for having our property tax increase three of four years, compared with every five years back east.
I don’t know what is driving the property tax increase pre- and post-fuel surge. Are we outgrowing ourselves? Are we planning too much growth without evaluating the burden of maintaining?
Exorbitant fuel costs are driving up prices on every product and service. In times when businesses and families are seriously feeling the financial squeeze, our county leadership may compound the squeeze by increasing our property taxes once again. I say, enough is enough!

Pension not set by county
I see in the Aug. 20 Journal Star that Lincoln’s own version of Ebenezer Scrooge, Coby Mach and the Lincoln Independent Business Association, once again is attempting to talk a government entity into reducing the pension match of its bargaining unit employees. Coby Mach and LIBA appeared at the County Board meeting and spoke out against the current county budget on the basis that it contains funding for a 1.5-to-1 ratio match of the county employee retirement contributions. Coby Mach suggested the County Board should reduce the match to 1 to 1.
Coby Mach should know that the 1.5 pension match is set by state statute, not by the County Board.
As the interminable budget woes of the city of Lincoln show, the county does a lot better job of handling its budget and finances than the city. Perhaps Coby Mach and LIBA ought to focus their budget-cutting attention on the city plan to provide subsidies to new and existing home buyers in Lincoln.

Sin has consequences
I’m writing in response to Holly Lafferty’s column (LJS, Aug. 16) regarding Christians and homosexual marriage. I have several problems with her comments.
Liberals love to trot out the verse from the Bible she quoted: “Judge not, that you may not be judged.” She infers that this means we aren’t to make any determination of right or wrong. I do not have to make a judgment of what is right and what is wrong. The Bible tells us what is right and what is wrong, and it clearly states that any form of sexual activity outside of marriage (between a man and a woman) is sin.
I realize that this term is considered by some to be out of date, but I find it particularly descriptive and fitting. The Bible also tells us that homosexuality is an abomination. If our behavior is to be governed by what each person thinks is right or wrong, we have lost the moral cohesion on which our great country was built.
Lafferty goes on to quote Jesus and the two great commandments. The first is to love the Lord with all of your heart. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself. Let’s think about these. Is it loving God to make up your own rules and tell Him that His rules don’t suit you? Isn’t this in truth rebellion? And let’s look at loving our neighbor. Love has many facets, but many seem to think “do whatever you want, and it’s all right.” But is it all right? Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, God’s law was instituted to spare humanity the plague of AIDS? Is it love to tell people it’s all right, or is it love to tell them that they are committing sin that will destroy them? Sin has consequences, whether it’s adultery, homosexuality, you name it.
Galatians 6:7 says: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.” We can have forgiveness through Jesus Christ, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t have to suffer the consequences of our actions in this life.

Citizenship rights at birth
Minister Rick Warren, in his Saddleback Church Forum a week ago, queried John McCain and Barack Obama with a question that should have been easily answered: At what point does a baby receive human rights? Neither candidate answered from the standpoint of the Constitution, which reveals the answer in Amendment 14, Section 1. The answer should have been “at birth.”
McCain offered a moral and philosophical response, pushing the point of rights all the way back to conception, something the Constitution does not itself guarantee. Obama’s response, however, revealed an astonishing shallowness of intellect, that he couldn’t answer the question with specifity because it was above his “pay grade.”
Perhaps Mr. Obama retreated from the question because he is on record, in Illinois, of not voting to prevent infanticide relative to born infants who had survived abortion procedures. The nuances of his opposition to a bill defending such infants is irrelevant, for the fact is that birth, under whatever conditions, assigns to these little persons constitutional rights of citizens.
That both candidates seemed ignorant of the Constitution in respect to Warren’s question is troubling. That one candidate had no clue as to how to answer so basic a question regarding human rights is a bit spooky and is certainly incompatible with the alleged great intellect said to be possessed by Mr. Obama.

Vets seek help, not buildings
I cannot speak for each and every veteran or service member, but here are some conclusions that I came to during the Wellness Conference in Omaha on Aug. 16:
The Veterans Administration, Nebraska politicians and civilians need to stop focusing on what they can build to make the VA look better or how they can get money for construction companies in Nebraska. We understand that your motivation is to help us, but we would rather you stop construction and hire more VA staff to help us. We would like to see a reduction in the length of lines. We have waited in too many lines. We want more service; pretty buildings are just cosmetic.
Our service members appreciate your concern for veterans of the war on terror, but please do not forget the veterans who have served in other U.S. conflicts. Rather than shiny new buildings, our service members would like to see more veterans and service members qualify for care through the Veterans Administration. This means spending more money on VA caregivers and staff.
The Nebraska National Guard is not only as good as the regular Army or Air Force, they are better than that. We are … the Nebraska National Guard! Many of our members came from active duty with the Marines, Army, Air Force and Navy. We offer a deeper experience of patriotism than anyone in America could rightfully expect from any unit or individual. God Bless America and Go Big Red!

But more importantly - marriage under the LAW is a civil contract, NOT a religious ceremony! You can marry, legally, with no religious involvement at all (and always could). And the only people talking about forcing religions to allow gay marriages...are religious homophobes!!! Example: the Catholic Church does NOT recognize divorce. Yet many (perhaps most) American Catholics have divorced and remarried. How? Their 2nd marriages were NOT in the Church! Because gov't cannot force them to allow divorce on demand, nor to perform 2nd marriages. Nor will any recognition of gay marriage force any religion to perform gar marriages! Which leads to the final point...I frankly don't give a hoot what YOUR Bible says about homosexuality, because its not MY Bible! And in a secular society (as America was always intended to be...else where are the references to Christ or Jesus in the Constitution or Bill of Rights?), we all get to decide for ourselves what is the right (or wrong) religion. But we do NOT get to single out some citizens for full rights, while denying them to others, on the basis of some peoples' religion (unless you're advocating an Iranian Mullah-style theocracy for the U.S.). The constitutional definition agrees with the biblical definition: In several places the Bible defines life as breathing, and I
found no place where it defines life otherwise. For example, Genesis 2:7,
which also defines the entrance of the soul: "and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul". Some other
references are Ezekiel 37:10, I Kings 17:17-21, and James 2:26. Since a
fetus doesn't breathe, it isn't life and doesn't have a soul, according
to biblical definition. "

However, I couldnt care less what other people eat. My code of ethics is my own, and it does not belong to anyone else. It only applies to me.
If you choose to believe in the bible, god, tarot cards, palm reading, astrology, wikka, or anything else, I think that is great. You found a set of rules you apply to help you live your life every day. But it is YOUR set of rules, that only applies to YOU.
Christians, and others, I appreciate that you are trying to help by converting me. You believe strongly, and want to help. But trying to stop gays from marrying would be the same as me trying to prevent you from getting married because you eat meat. After all, if you do, you can have children, and then they would grow up to eat meat, and that is against MY code of ethics, thus it must be WRONG for YOU to do it. Wait. No, that doesnt work any better than stopping gays from marrying would stop people from being gay.
Believe what you want. Live your life according to any set of rules you want. Read tea leaves to decide what shirt to wear today. Burn a candle to ward off ghosts. Dance nekkid in a field of wheat to ensure a good harvest. If it works for you, that is great. But dont think for one second that it works for everyone else too. You will get a whole heck of alot more respect if you quietly live by your own set of rules, than if you try to force them on others. Lead by example, not by force. Hitler was another christian that tried to lead by force. It didnt work very well. Gandhi led by example, and he is concidered quite a guy. "

and where on earth is all this money going????? As my Calif friends

can't afford to take a big loss on selling your house. I'm sure the city
"so called fathers" are laughing theirselves all the way to the bank for
making peoples lives as miserable as they can!! Look at the money spent
painting some of the city's light poles black, only now the paint has peeled off and its paint 'em again - look at the money wasted on such
foolishness, yellow lines painted down sidewalks. Folks this kind of crap has cost taxpayers big bucks. These rich leaders are like kids in

My property taxes have pretty much remained constant or dropped a bit the past 7 years. My valuation has increased quite a bit, but isn't that normal? Would you honestly sell your house today at the price you bought it 7 years ago? Really, honestly??? My house is appraised at what I could get for it, without a doubt. I even filed a complaint 2 years ago, and the Assessor agreed with my complaint and lowered the valuation to a point I agreed with. No problem at all.
Lincoln is a great city and I'm writing this FROM Lincoln, not some supposed paradise. There are lots of good things happening here if you want to look for it. You don't know how often I get angry with your sentiment that I am not worthy of God's Love. You haven't even a clue what it's like to be in my shoes. I only wish you would get to know me as "a person" rather instead of "that person." It would mean a world of difference to me if you would take the time to find out more about me rather than focus on the obvious of homosexuality.
Now I recognize that you have a visceral reaction to my lifestyle, that's fine because it's only natural. But here's the real kicker. I have a visceral reaction, too! I am disgusted by people who claim to know how to run my life better than I do. There is a solution to this problem that both of us have. First, you have to get your mind out of the gutter! Because what I do in my bedroom shouldn't matter to what happens in yours! Or perhaps it's the lack of action in your bedroom that makes mine seem so inviting? (that's just a thought) Now for my problem of letting "you people" get under my skin, I'm going to leave well enough alone. I'm going to try to stop paying attention to you because when I give you the time out of my day, that is when I get upset. Your words can only infuriate me when I let them.
Lastly, we live in a world filled with ample troubles. We have insurmountable poverty in 3rd world countries. We have diseases that ravish the promise of our future. We have weapons that can only do one thing, to destory the world as we know it. We have countries that don't abide by the will of its people. We have leaders who have their own agenda yet that agenda doesn't do us common folk any good. We have real human tragedies that God would continually sob over and yet you, Dorothy Westphal, want to convince me that I am not worthy of our creator's love? Now that's a pity in my perception.

My personal favorite mis-informed statement was the blurb about stupid shepherds writing the Bible. I would consider most doctors, world travelers, tax agents, linguistic students and scholars to be above average on the intelligence scale (just a small sample of those who helped put together the Bible).
Anyway, back to being gay as it relates to religion: "Being with" someone of the same sex is listed in the Christian Bible ("bible" btw is defined as being a collection of books) as one of many different ways to sin. Sure, there are some people (unfortunately, these tend to be the loud, outspoken people) who just crucify the gay community simply because it is a sin they, themselves, can't and won't commit (and is therefore sooo much easier to cast the first stone). There are others of us who don't persecute people based on sins (swearing is my personal vice), but still object to the legalization of gay marriage because it would mean large-scale acceptance of something our faith tells us is immoral. I don't hate anyone, I don't want to hurt anyone, I am simply trusting the doctrines of my faith when it comes to this issue. I am willing to bet if "marriage" became identified in the law as a "union" or something, then the extension of equal rights to gay unions would be much easier to achieve. "
