Letters, 8/25: Enough is enough!

Monday, Aug 25, 2008 - 12:54:30 am CDT

Our family moved here from the East Coast four years ago. Lincoln is a great place to live and raise a family. Its safety, parks and schools have much to offer the community.

In comparing our move, we noticed right away that Lincoln’s property tax was much higher than what we were paying back home. Our West Virginia property on the fringe of the city was just more than three acres compared to living on a typical lot size within Lincoln. Adjusting to smaller land was easy, but it wasn’t that way with paying higher property taxes, about $500 a year there compared with close to $4,000 here.

We justified the higher property tax expense as a cost of living within the city, good schools, roads and recreational parks and trails. What we are having trouble understanding is that for every year but one our property tax has increased. We were not prepared for having our property tax increase three of four years, compared with every five years back east.

I don’t know what is driving the property tax increase pre- and post-fuel surge. Are we outgrowing ourselves? Are we planning too much growth without evaluating the burden of maintaining?

Exorbitant fuel costs are driving up prices on every product and service. In times when businesses and families are seriously feeling the financial squeeze, our county leadership may compound the squeeze by increasing our property taxes once again. I say, enough is enough!

Pension not set by county

I see in the Aug. 20 Journal Star that Lincoln’s own version of Ebenezer Scrooge, Coby Mach and the Lincoln Independent Business Association, once again is attempting to talk a government entity into reducing the pension match of its bargaining unit employees. Coby Mach and LIBA appeared at the County Board meeting and spoke out against the current county budget on the basis that it contains funding for a 1.5-to-1 ratio match of the county employee retirement contributions. Coby Mach suggested the County Board should reduce the match to 1 to 1.

Coby Mach should know that the 1.5 pension match is set by state statute, not by the County Board.

As the interminable budget woes of the city of Lincoln show, the county does a lot better job of handling its budget and finances than the city. Perhaps Coby Mach and LIBA ought to focus their budget-cutting attention on the city plan to provide subsidies to new and existing home buyers in Lincoln.

Sin has consequences

I’m writing in response to Holly Lafferty’s column (LJS, Aug. 16) regarding Christians and homosexual marriage. I have several problems with her comments.

Liberals love to trot out the verse from the Bible she quoted: “Judge not, that you may not be judged.” She infers that this means we aren’t to make any determination of right or wrong. I do not have to make a judgment of what is right and what is wrong. The Bible tells us what is right and what is wrong, and it clearly states that any form of sexual activity outside of marriage (between a man and a woman) is sin.

I realize that this term is considered by some to be out of date, but I find it particularly descriptive and fitting. The Bible also tells us that homosexuality is an abomination. If our behavior is to be governed by what each person thinks is right or wrong, we have lost the moral cohesion on which our great country was built.

Lafferty goes on to quote Jesus and the two great commandments. The first is to love the Lord with all of your heart. The second is to love your neighbor as yourself. Let’s think about these. Is it loving God to make up your own rules and tell Him that His rules don’t suit you? Isn’t this in truth rebellion? And let’s look at loving our neighbor. Love has many facets, but many seem to think “do whatever you want, and it’s all right.” But is it all right? Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, God’s law was instituted to spare humanity the plague of AIDS? Is it love to tell people it’s all right, or is it love to tell them that they are committing sin that will destroy them? Sin has consequences, whether it’s adultery, homosexuality, you name it.

Galatians 6:7 says: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.” We can have forgiveness through Jesus Christ, but that doesn’t mean that we won’t have to suffer the consequences of our actions in this life.

Citizenship rights at birth

Minister Rick Warren, in his Saddleback Church Forum a week ago, queried John McCain and Barack Obama with a question that should have been easily answered: At what point does a baby receive human rights? Neither candidate answered from the standpoint of the Constitution, which reveals the answer in Amendment 14, Section 1. The answer should have been “at birth.”

McCain offered a moral and philosophical response, pushing the point of rights all the way back to conception, something the Constitution does not itself guarantee. Obama’s response, however, revealed an astonishing shallowness of intellect, that he couldn’t answer the question with specifity because it was above his “pay grade.”

Perhaps Mr. Obama retreated from the question because he is on record, in Illinois, of not voting to prevent infanticide relative to born infants who had survived abortion procedures. The nuances of his opposition to a bill defending such infants is irrelevant, for the fact is that birth, under whatever conditions, assigns to these little persons constitutional rights of citizens.

That both candidates seemed ignorant of the Constitution in respect to Warren’s question is troubling. That one candidate had no clue as to how to answer so basic a question regarding human rights is a bit spooky and is certainly incompatible with the alleged great intellect said to be possessed by Mr. Obama.

Vets seek help, not buildings

I cannot speak for each and every veteran or service member, but here are some conclusions that I came to during the Wellness Conference in Omaha on Aug. 16:

The Veterans Administration, Nebraska politicians and civilians need to stop focusing on what they can build to make the VA look better or how they can get money for construction companies in Nebraska. We understand that your motivation is to help us, but we would rather you stop construction and hire more VA staff to help us. We would like to see a reduction in the length of lines. We have waited in too many lines. We want more service; pretty buildings are just cosmetic.

Our service members appreciate your concern for veterans of the war on terror, but please do not forget the veterans who have served in other U.S. conflicts. Rather than shiny new buildings, our service members would like to see more veterans and service members qualify for care through the Veterans Administration. This means spending more money on VA caregivers and staff.

The Nebraska National Guard is not only as good as the regular Army or Air Force, they are better than that. We are … the Nebraska National Guard! Many of our members came from active duty with the Marines, Army, Air Force and Navy. We offer a deeper experience of patriotism than anyone in America could rightfully expect from any unit or individual. God Bless America and Go Big Red!

" Dorothy - several points come to mind. First, the selectivity of homophobes to justify barring gay marriage or civil recognition. The New Testament includes NO explicit words against homosexuality, that is contained in the Old Testament. Yet so to are bans on the wear of certain materials in clothes, the eating of shellfish and port, the requirement to kill rude children, etc. Bring these up, the Christian will always point to Jesus' words to the effect, that which came before is no more (that is, Jesus' message of love and tolerance replaces the strict code of the Old Testament). Except, apparently, when it comes to homosexuals!
But more importantly - marriage under the LAW is a civil contract, NOT a religious ceremony! You can marry, legally, with no religious involvement at all (and always could). And the only people talking about forcing religions to allow gay marriages...are religious homophobes!!! Example: the Catholic Church does NOT recognize divorce. Yet many (perhaps most) American Catholics have divorced and remarried. How? Their 2nd marriages were NOT in the Church! Because gov't cannot force them to allow divorce on demand, nor to perform 2nd marriages. Nor will any recognition of gay marriage force any religion to perform gar marriages! Which leads to the final point...I frankly don't give a hoot what YOUR Bible says about homosexuality, because its not MY Bible! And in a secular society (as America was always intended to be...else where are the references to Christ or Jesus in the Constitution or Bill of Rights?), we all get to decide for ourselves what is the right (or wrong) religion. But we do NOT get to single out some citizens for full rights, while denying them to others, on the basis of some peoples' religion (unless you're advocating an Iranian Mullah-style theocracy for the U.S.). " Thank you Dorothy for taking us back to the 80s in linking homosexuality to AIDS! It continues to amaze me the ignorance some can display. Let me ask you this, AIDS is a pandemic in Africa where it is anything but a "gay disease" so what exactly is the sin these families and communities are being punished for in this region of God's world. Yes, Dorothy, I agree with you that the Bible says homosexuality is an abomination. But, have you ever looked at what else the Bible condemns in Leviticus? Where is your outrage at the "uncleanliness" (which is the equivalent of the Hebrew "Abomination") we in society have brought to our families and communities bu not following the dietary, clothing, and hygiene laws put forth in Leviticus? Why do YOU choose to put homosexuality above all other sins. Because you have some divine insight or because this is what you were taught? I am always amazed how many people like to use the Bible to justify hate and rarely do they know of what the Bible as speaks. Finally, let me ask you this, where is your outrage of adulterers, liars, greedy people, people who ignore the less fortunate? All of these are mentioned throughout the New Testament yet I rarely hear anything from your kind about these sins. God has given us a gift with our life and through his son Jesus Christ. Dorothy, I will pray for you and other like you that someday you quit sin-ranking, you realize what the true message of the Gospel is and that you come to realize what God can offer us in the world aside from hate. My property taxes, in the middle of Lincoln, have actually gone down a little or stabilized over the last couple of years. Partially because my assessment hasn't gone up dramatically. I don't live in a McMansion, I live in a modest home and pay approx $2000. a year in taxes. That covers my sons education, police and fire dept. services, city streets, parks and other city services that I have use of. Is it too much??? I guess it is all in the eyes of the beholder......By the way, Welcome to Lincoln!! We are happy you chose our wonderful city. "

" Bible day on the Letters to the Editor! As a disclaimer,I do not believe in the bible...I see it as a book of parables and stories that are entertaining and of some learning value, but not to be taken verbatim. From a purely secular point of view (remember this is a country that has a separation of church and state) there is no reason why gays should not have the same marriage rights. Also there is no reason why a woman who has a pregnancy that she feels cannot carry should abort. The irony is that we tell women and gays what and what they can't do with their own lives, but there is absolutely no support system if they follow the "traditional" way of doing things. Do we expect gays once again to live extremely unhappy lives in the closet? How about those non-aborted babies after birth...not many people seem to want to think about how to deal with those children after the birth (and yes...there are PLENTY of non-white babies that do not get adopted in this country). It's time we quit with the biblical tripe and deal with these issues in a realistic manner rather than hiding behind a big book. "

" Thank you, Mr. Terrell, for pointing out that, according to the legal defiition, "human life" begins at birth.

The constitutional definition agrees with the biblical definition: In several places the Bible defines life as breathing, and I
found no place where it defines life otherwise. For example, Genesis 2:7,
which also defines the entrance of the soul: "and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul". Some other
references are Ezekiel 37:10, I Kings 17:17-21, and James 2:26. Since a
fetus doesn't breathe, it isn't life and doesn't have a soul, according
to biblical definition. "

The schools 6 years ago built new buildings at a exorbant price then had computers stolen before the doors opened. A supply person said the schools threw away desks and chairs that should have been sold on auction. One million dollar in math books were disposed of because they were wrong for the schools. Disposed of means sold for recycling. I got the hell out of there and have double the home for one third the taxes. I am a vegitarian. 12 years ago I made the personal choice to no longer eat meat. My personal code of ethics prevents me from eating meat. I feel very strongly about it. However, I couldnt care less what other people eat. My code of ethics is my own, and it does not belong to anyone else. It only applies to me.

If you choose to believe in the bible, god, tarot cards, palm reading, astrology, wikka, or anything else, I think that is great. You found a set of rules you apply to help you live your life every day. But it is YOUR set of rules, that only applies to YOU.

Christians, and others, I appreciate that you are trying to help by converting me. You believe strongly, and want to help. But trying to stop gays from marrying would be the same as me trying to prevent you from getting married because you eat meat. After all, if you do, you can have children, and then they would grow up to eat meat, and that is against MY code of ethics, thus it must be WRONG for YOU to do it. Wait. No, that doesnt work any better than stopping gays from marrying would stop people from being gay.

Believe what you want. Live your life according to any set of rules you want. Read tea leaves to decide what shirt to wear today. Burn a candle to ward off ghosts. Dance nekkid in a field of wheat to ensure a good harvest. If it works for you, that is great. But dont think for one second that it works for everyone else too. You will get a whole heck of alot more respect if you quietly live by your own set of rules, than if you try to force them on others. Lead by example, not by force. Hitler was another christian that tried to lead by force. It didnt work very well. Gandhi led by example, and he is concidered quite a guy. "

in Lincoln. Why - because after I pay $4,100.00 for property tax, double
state income tax, more than double vehicle taxes, and double cost of
living, who can afford to buy anything?? In the east I had a big yard
and you weren't dictated as to the length of your grass, a much nicer
house, and you'd have to search high and low for a road that wasn't
paved!!! As my Calif. neighbors & I said, with our $4,100. plus taxes
for our little dinky houses and NO yard, what kind of taxes are these
people paying with all these big two plus story, nice yards, homes taxes
and where on earth is all this money going????? As my Calif friends
came back to care for their elders as I did, they are looking for a home
back again in Calif. Problem is several neighbors have their houses for
sale and they don't sell. You can't afford to live in Lincoln and you
can't afford to take a big loss on selling your house. I'm sure the city
"so called fathers" are laughing theirselves all the way to the bank for
making peoples lives as miserable as they can!! Look at the money spent
painting some of the city's light poles black, only now the paint has peeled off and its paint 'em again - look at the money wasted on such
foolishness, yellow lines painted down sidewalks. Folks this kind of crap has cost taxpayers big bucks. These rich leaders are like kids in
a candy store and demand every kind of candy or else!!!! There are even neighbors that detest Lincoln so much they couldn't even stay until they could sell they home. They just packed up and left. You will reap
what you sow!!! "

(There is no "northwest" school in Lincoln, by the way. And you better double-check the accuracy of the "throwing away books and desks" comment.)

My property taxes have pretty much remained constant or dropped a bit the past 7 years. My valuation has increased quite a bit, but isn't that normal? Would you honestly sell your house today at the price you bought it 7 years ago? Really, honestly??? My house is appraised at what I could get for it, without a doubt. I even filed a complaint 2 years ago, and the Assessor agreed with my complaint and lowered the valuation to a point I agreed with. No problem at all.

Lincoln is a great city and I'm writing this FROM Lincoln, not some supposed paradise. There are lots of good things happening here if you want to look for it. Heath, you made the right choice moving here. Like everything and every place there's pluses and minuses...and I think Lincoln definitely has more pluses. "

I only wish you would get to know me as "a person" rather instead of "that person." It would mean a world of difference to me if you would take the time to find out more about me rather than focus on the obvious of homosexuality.

Now I recognize that you have a visceral reaction to my lifestyle, that's fine because it's only natural. But here's the real kicker. I have a visceral reaction, too! I am disgusted by people who claim to know how to run my life better than I do. There is a solution to this problem that both of us have. First, you have to get your mind out of the gutter! Because what I do in my bedroom shouldn't matter to what happens in yours! Or perhaps it's the lack of action in your bedroom that makes mine seem so inviting? (that's just a thought) Now for my problem of letting "you people" get under my skin, I'm going to leave well enough alone. I'm going to try to stop paying attention to you because when I give you the time out of my day, that is when I get upset. Your words can only infuriate me when I let them.

Lastly, we live in a world filled with ample troubles. We have insurmountable poverty in 3rd world countries. We have diseases that ravish the promise of our future. We have weapons that can only do one thing, to destory the world as we know it. We have countries that don't abide by the will of its people. Looking at the big picture and deciding that Jesus' actions and words should be life's guideline, and working on our own sins before we point fingers (or throw stones) at anyone else will be our aim, is the liberal outlook, apparently. So because these two outlooks will not likely mesh into middle ground, I suggest we concentrate on what we DO or SHOULD agree on, as children of God. That would be the positive effects of Christianity for the believer, as well as the good we all try to do - missions, helping disaster relief, feeding the hungry, etc. Let us fill our lives with all these great things, and quit sweating the small stuff. My faith does not exist to judge others or put them down (a Pharisee-type thing to do!), but instead rests on the great love of God, and my walking with Him all through life. "

Second, why is it that religion has to be used for judgment of others instead of helping others? I seem to recall, from my long ago Catholic upbringing that in addition to what seemed like a lot of nonsense about livestock and rules about clothing, there is a theme in there about helping people who are less fortunate and trying to make the world a better place. So many people need help and there is so much to be done, it is hard to understand why people who spend their time trying to hurt others instead of helping those in need. "

The problem with the VA hospitals is with our current leadership. Our current president does not care about people once they are out of uniform. To him, they are expendable and aren't worth spending a dime on. That is the problem with the VA. No support from the top. We need someone in there who cares about our vets and McCain is not the one. " First off on the matter of the VA, the massive cuts to the VA began during the Clinton Administration (What year did the Lincoln VA Hospital Close?) Funding was redirected since the volumn of WW2/Korea/VN era veterans was dropping. Now with another war, more veterans entering the system the funding that was reallocated during the Clinton Administration needs to be re-found to support the new volumn the VA has to deal with. So this funding problem is not a Bush problemn, we can lay this directly at the feet of Clinton for his cuts (which helped generate his "surpluses")and the current House of Representatives who currently allocate the funding for VA Medical care. And since we veterans are not known as a large Democratic voting block, we know where the funding priority lies there. And yes, if we turn the entire US Health Care system into a VA styled morass, heaven help us, "yes, you have a heart problem, our next available appt for surgury is Feb 23, 2012, here are some vicodin for the pain, see you then." " Religion vs. Gay. This argument always sounds the same, doesn't it? The Bible is pure Mythology? I personally don't think so. The statement that the events of the Bible are not true and can be proven to not be true are pure falsehood. The scientific community can not prove OR disprove any of the historical events (BTW secular texts back up the stories in the NT).
The New Testament overriding the Old Testament instructions only pertains to the method of salvation (Uh, did anyone take high school English-- Context is everything when you are reading historical texts). My personal favorite mis-informed statement was the blurb about stupid shepherds writing the Bible. I would consider most doctors, world travelers, tax agents, linguistic students and scholars to be above average on the intelligence scale (just a small sample of those who helped put together the Bible).

Anyway, back to being gay as it relates to religion: "Being with" someone of the same sex is listed in the Christian Bible ("bible" btw is defined as being a collection of books) as one of many different ways to sin. Sure, there are some people (unfortunately, these tend to be the loud, outspoken people) who just crucify the gay community simply because it is a sin they, themselves, can't and won't commit (and is therefore sooo much easier to cast the first stone). There are others of us who don't persecute people based on sins (swearing is my personal vice), but still object to the legalization of gay marriage because it would mean large-scale acceptance of something our faith tells us is immoral. I don't hate anyone, I don't want to hurt anyone, I am simply trusting the doctrines of my faith when it comes to this issue. I am willing to bet if "marriage" became identified in the law as a "union" or something, then the extension of equal rights to gay unions would be much easier to achieve. "

" Whatever your orientation please, we do not need a "parade" everytime someone disagrees with your prefered lifestyle. Scientifically sex is for one reason, reproduction, so in the scientific sense homosexuality is abnormal, (yes, there are examples of homosexual behavior for reasons other than reproduction, elsewhere in the animal kingdom, still in a scientific sense it is seen as abnormal) otherwise in today's society what was yesterdays "sins" are almost expected to be today's norm. Homosexuality is a behavior, nothing more, you are not born with a "gay" gene, or any other aquired symptom of being gay, it is normally a preference or choice. Now that being said, where does this slippery slope stop? What modes of behavior do we allow within our society? What behavior man found abnormal and illegal only a few years ago is now to be accepted in a few years? I fear that once the gates are opened legally, the precedent will be set for other forms of behavior we now find offensive or illegal to be legalized. Can you imagine a pedifile using the same legal arguement as the homosexual community today in a few years, or a bigamist. Do not say it is impossible, your grandfathers said the same thing about homosexuality. Be whatever you want, be with whoever you desire, but stop demanding to be treated and accepted within our society until you understand that everyone within our society does not and probably will not agree with your behavior. We can not change centuries of belief in a few years, destroying beliefs such as male/female marriage as the norm will take more than the arguements currently presented by the homosexual community, as well as more time. Sorry the human animal is not capable of that. "

Anyone who thinks Obama lacks the intellect to answer that question is seriously deluded. He certainly avoided the question, which was politically smart. To do otherwise would have provided a clear target for the McCain campaign to focus on. Better to remain a little vague. I’m reminded of the time when Colin Powell, fresh off the apparent successes of Desert Storm, was being discussed across the political spectrum as a can’t-lose presidential candidate for either party, although he had made no indication of such ambitions. That’s when one sardonic commenter said “wait until someone asks him about abortion. No matter what he says, he’ll lose a third of his support right there and then”. "

In addition, I also feel that we need to review the "Right To Privacy" in the bill of rights. This has been abused to the point that some groups in this country have stepped across the lines of decency to state. " You have to do it my way or the highway".

To think otherwise is to believe that the laws of nature were suspended, i.e., miracles occurred, and those are matters of faith, not science. This includes Noah’s flood, Joshua’s long day, the seven days of creation, and a host of other events that do not stand up to the scrutiny of science. Seventh-day Adventists believe in going to church on Saturday. Should they lobby for legislation to pass laws that everyone should go to church on Saturday?

Large-scale acceptance of something our faith tells us is immoral also could extend to legal consumption of alcohol. There are several religions that believe drinking alcohol is immoral--that is large-scale acceptance of something their faith tells them is immoral. Following that same logic, maybe consumption of alcohol should be made illegal?

Also. I attend church every sunday. And never... ever have I found a compelling argument that will "save" me from my homosexuality. Nor do I believe that I need to be saved. I actually believe, in my heart of hearts that God made me this way, and intended for me to better the world as a lesbian mother/wife/student/teacher/christian/human being.
Being a Christain isn't supposed to be easy. It is supposed to be about doing what is right. And after much prayer and deliberation I honestly believe I am right.
Why would I choose to be so hated, and condemned, beaten, and dehumanized by my peers if simply turning away from my sin were an option. When your family is your sin, when your love is your sin, when your own heart and the very life you live is your sin, it is impossible to simply turn your head put your blnders on and turn away from your sin.
