Caddie Corner: Things you'd like to see on a golf course
Just once, we’d like to see:
* A new driver that isn’t bigger, doesn’t have a bigger sweet spot, and actually allows for golfers to slice and hook.
* A gimmick on the Golf Channel that has honest testimony: “This whammo whopdeedoop not only looked silly, cost me $129, but didn’t work and actually so messed up my mind, I gave up golf.”
* A lipped putt go in.
* A bunker, followed by another bunker with the same kind of sand.
* A guy moves up a tee box because he needs to.
* Keeping score differently: Zen — tracking only the shots you liked; riders — the number of shots where you actually had to get back in the cart to get to the ball.
* A penalty for the person with the scorecard announcing your score on the 18th tee box.
* Penalties for taking a cell phone on the course, then two strokes for leaving the phone on and answering, and disqualification and a year ban from the course for initiating a call (unless it’s to the clubhouse to see if they’ll bring out more balls).
* Penalty for saying “This is my worst round of the year.” Come on, you’ve played worse.
In the money
Nebraska student Carly Froehlich received one of 12 $1,500 Paul Runyan Collegiate Management Scholarships from the PGA. The award goes to those students who maintain a 3.0 or better grade-point average, complete the Playing Ability Test, and present a paper, “Why Do You Want to Become a PGA Professional?”
Wild Horse
The popular Wild Horse Golf Course in Gothenburg was again on Golf Magazine’s list of “Top 100 Courses You Can Play,” at No. 60 this year. Somehow, the course, a links-style bargain at any price but costs $35, dropped from No. 50. No. 1 on the list is Pacific Dunes ($265) at Bandon, Ore., followed by Pebble Beach ($500) and Whistling Straits ($290) in Wisconsin.
If you’ve never played Wild Horse, go there and play. If you have played it, you know it is beautiful, challenging and a true picture of the beginning of the sandhills treasure of Nebraska.
