Victoria Ayotte Brown: Peter Rabbit's plights garners national attention, comments
Hail Peter Rabbit. The story about Hickman’s letter to the horse’s owners that Peter Rabbit must be moved within 30 days went national, going up on AOL News. The story linked back to the Journal Star for more information. Readers inundated the Journal Star Web site, submitting more than 300 comments. Two hundred six of those were published.
The verdict of JournalStar.com commenters was about the same as that of an AOL News poll, “Should Peter Rabbit be allowed to stay in town?” Ninety-nine percent, or 22,997 people, voted yes. The Journal Star even received a letter purporting to be from the horse’s mouth, giving editors a few guffaws. There’s no mistaking the general interest in this story.
Mike in Quebec City commented: “Leave the man and his horse alone; this is ridiculous and shameful. … What happened to community spirit in the USA?”
“The horse was there first, long before the new zoning. He should be grandfathered in, so he can live out his life there. The treatment he and his owner are getting is completely unfair,” Teresa in Florida said.
Lincoln woman goes green with Xebra vehicle; 64 comments published.
Readers gave the three-wheel electric car mixed reviews.
“Good for her,” jeff wrote. “It is so easy to go with the flow and not ever step out of the herd and really act on your sense of what is right. We’ll start to see more and more of these nontraditional vehicles on Nebraska roads. DMV, start thinking a bit more creatively.”
All I know commented: “Is that if I get stuck behind this car in traffic, I’ll be highly annoyed. I applaud the effort to reduce our dependence on oil; however, this is definitely not the car I would have chosen. 25-40 miles per charge at best? That is not enough. Also, the fact that if that woman was involved in an accident in that little green pea, she would be creamed! My health and safety is worth paying higher gas prices and driving less for now.”
Public will get to view, comment on arena proposals; 49 comments published.
“Of the three alternatives, there really doesn’t seem to be a lot to quibble over,” th Street Blues commented. “Evidently there is no question that a hotel and the ice rink will be built there, just minor stuff like whether or not to extend a couple of streets with traffic and if we want fountains. This is a Hobson’s choice!”
But JB said: “This arena should have been built yesterday. How many years did it take to get Pershing built? Many decades without. Lincoln will lose state basketball and volleyball to smaller cities that don’t take forever to do things. It will cost some money, but only doing it first class will work.”
Letters, 8/12: More drilling won’t help; 48 comments published.
Stu Luttich’s letter generated a robust debate.
“We cannot have it both ways. We either provide domestic oil to lower prices, making more funds available for research in alternatives, or keep watching OPEC raise the prices and keep buying up NYC real estate with their profits,” Thinking said.
RadioParrott wrote: “Stu is right. Those international oil giants have been doing deals with everybody, everywhere. If we want domestic oil security, nationalize those firms.”
Christians should quit wasting time attacking gay marriage; 48 comments published.
Holly Lafferty stirred up some strong sentiments with her community column on gay marriage.
“Supporting marriage between one man and one woman isn’t about judging people; we are all fallen, every last one of us, married and single alike. It’s simply about recognizing the truth of our nature, supporting strong families and building the foundations of a strong society,” another point of view commented.
Peb wrote: “Well said, Holly. I have yet to receive a concise, logical answer to my question: Why should the beliefs of some religions be made into law? Having the beliefs of some religions made into law is entering a slippery slope. The religion I grew up in believes that drinking alcohol is a sin.”
