BnEATRICE — Three people who tried to cheat at keno games in Blue Springs have been found guilty.

The three — 36-year-old Jana Fletcher, 46-year-old Robert Roberts and 43-year-old Jamie Phipps — pleaded no contest in Gage County District Court. They are all from Wymore.

They were convicted of trying to cheat a lottery device, violating Nebraska’s Lottery Act.

Sentencing was set for October.

Authorities say that when one of the three called a keno game, he or she would withhold a numbered ball ejected from the keno machine. Then he or she would place a “one-spot’’ bet that the number on the ball would be called in the next game. One-spot bets have odds of 3 to 1, giving betters payoffs of three times their bets.

" This has been tried before - the solution is to go with computer-generated numbers instead of number balls. The reason I know it's been tried before is that those people got caught, too, and had their names in the paper for all to see. They brought their trouble upon themselves - just makes me wonder how much they managed to 'win' before the night they were caught! "
