OMAHA — The Nebraska Educational Telecommunications Commission will receive a grant of more than $250,000 from the U.S. Agriculture Department.

Thomas Dorr, agriculture under secretary for rural development, has announced nearly $5 million in public television digital transition grants will fund 19 projects in 18 states.

Dorr said public television stations are an important link to rural communities, providing local news, emergency information and educational programming.

Funding awarded through the Digital Public Television grant program also may be used for engineering and environmental studies associated with the transition to digital television.

" Pork, pork, and more pork. Doesn't it sound just lovely public TV creating a propaganda link to the poor rural communities? With all the media options available today, there is absolutely no requirement for public TV or radio. "

" 'Pork', just how many of those media options are available to persons not able to pay for them. Internet? Gotta pay. Cable? Gotta pay. Unless you got to the library, which is tough to do for some people raising a family and having to work then come home to take care of kids. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean it has no value. "
