HASTINGS — A 50-year-old Hastings man convicted of incest will spend up to 20 years in prison for the crime.

Jose Aguilar-Moreno was sentenced Monday in Adams County District Court to 19 to 20 years in prison. He had been found guilty of incest in April.

Authorities say Aguilar-Moreno sexually abused a female family member over a 15-year period. He will be eligible for parole after 9 1/2 years and will have to register as a sex offender upon his release.

" Icky? Yes, I suppose so. But should it be illegal? I don't think so, unless it involves someone unable to consent for some reason. Just because something conflicts with your personal beliefs or traditions doesn't automatically mean that it should be illegal. People get less jail time for worse things. "

" Uh, Morality vs. Legality, it does say "abused" in the article, so it might have been outside of the neighborhood of consent. Are you going to go in front of the Unicameral and stand up for incest legalization? They didn't just make up the law in this case. It was already on the books. And yeah, Joy has her own beliefs, but her beliefs didn't make this illegal. It was made law before Joy said it's "icky". "

" Where was this judge when my Ex-husband was sentenced??? My Ex only got 6-12 years for sexually abusing our daughter. I wish we would have had this judge! "

" "People get less time for worse things!???" Are you kidding me?? This may be true but you make it sound like this isnt a big deal...How about you get sexually abused for 15 years and then comment on this story! He may as well killed this person for all the damage done physically, mentally and emotionally. "

" I think M vs L was refering to the puritanical taboo against incest rather than the details of this case. (Although I hate to speak for him, and may be wrong)

Abuse, regardless of situation, relation, or type is a crime. However, looking at the crime as somehow more severe due to the family relationship is absurd. A crime's severity and punishment should not be based on who committed it, nor who the victim was. This leads to problems like special sentances for celebrities and harsher punishments for the poor.

I agree with M vs L that in no instance should consensual and priviate acts between adults be the business of anyone else. Insest itself is an outdated and purely religious taboo. This is the same thinking that made it a crime for a black man to sleep with a white woman. Coercion of anyone, abuse of anyone, the assault of anyone by anyone should be treated the same regardless of the circumstances. To do less is a slap in the face of someone who has suffered at the hands of a stranger, as though that somehow makes it less horrible. "
