OMAHA — More all-terrain vehicles are showing up on city streets in Nebraska.

Because of rising gas prices, at least eight communities have approved laws allowing ATVs.

Alliance Councilman Trent Benzel says it’s a good idea because it will save a little money.

The Legislature in 2007 passed a law allowing cities and villages to legalize ATVs under certain conditions. Interest rose this year when gas prices climb to $4 a gallon.

Under the law, ATVs can be used only during daylight hours. The must have lights and a bicycle safety flag, and can’t exceed 30 mph. Drivers must have liability insurance and a valid driver’s license.

ATVs cost around $3,500 and typically get 30 to 40 miles per gallon in the city.

" How does the state law for seatbelts apply? How about helmets? "

" Yeah! why don't we have helmet laws for riding in car? It's just like a seatbelt on a motorccle. "

" This is fantastic news, I hope Lincoln picks up on it. Do you know how many ATV's can park in a parking lot compared to a pick up truck??

The gas savings? "
