CARTER LAKE, Iowa — Pottawattamie County officials in Iowa are considering taking legal steps to stop the construction of a proposed casino in Carter Lake.

Carter Lake is on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River, just northeast of downtown Omaha.

Iowa local officials say they will consider joining an existing lawsuit, or filing their own lawsuit, to stop the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska from building a casino in Carter Lake. The Pottawattamie County Board planned discuss those options at its meeting Monday.

Under federal law, Native American tribes may offer gambling that is legal in a state where the tribe owns land.

The U.S. Justice Department has already said that Nebraska has no legal standing to challenge the Ponca Indian Tribe’s plan.

" It will be on Iowa's property. They allow gambling. It's as simple as that.

Iowa reaps the benefits of tax dollars while Nebraska lives in the stone ages.

Why can't people use their smarts? Maybe it's because they don't have any. "

" How about we have NO casino in Carter Lake?

And then niether Nebraska or Iowa....will have to pay for or deal with the social problems of gambling...like addiction, bankruptcy, crime,
divorces/break up of families/pain to children, etc. And that is not to mention the huge amounts of money that are drained out of the area economy. Finally, I am not the smartest person in the world...but...if Warren Buffett, Dr. Tom Osborne, Senator Ben Nelson, Senator Chuck Hagel, Congressman Jeff Fortenberry, Congressman Lee Terry, Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning, Hal Daub, Pete Ricketts, Archbishop Elden Curtiss, Pat Loontjer, Mayor Mike Fahey, etc., including the long time Mayor of Council Bluffs.......all say "NO" to the casino in Carter Lake...ahhhhhh,
I would tend to agree with all of these people!! And that's my story and I am sticking to it! (add to that list Nancy Osborne) "

" Was looking for the chance to gamble. Not a gambler now but was sure as soon as the casino opened on this side of the river I would be hooked. I suppose no casino will spare my wife from abuse and the loss of all our assets. Gues am saved from a life of drugs, alcohol and prostitution to pay for it all. Still was looking forward to having those Indians take everything from me that I own. Seemed like justice for some reason. Oh well. There's always next weeks gas prices to look forward to. "

" The precedent has been set, there is gambling in Iowa. But not for the Ponca? Are we afraid of empowering the Ponca Nation? Once they get the casino, they will have capital to lobby and pursue action towards the injustice they have faced in the past. Are you scared of this? Is one more casino going to cause all of the social ills you claim? If so, lets get rid of one non native casino. Are we unable to choose for ourselves to be responsible? Stop blaming others for your own bad choices. The Ponca have every right to build the casino, just like others who have built casino's in Iowa. From my perspective, this racist unjust oppression towards the Ponca Nation is uncalled for. I am looking forward to seeing you soon in the Ponca's Casino. It will happen. "

" You've got to be kidding....how deep down in the garbage can did you have to go to come up the "race card?"

This is 2008....please, fast-forward you thinking into the real world and the gambling issue!

As Nebraskans have proven in election after election....gambling is addictive, and very destructive to families and our economy! The $millions$ of hard earned dollars from low income and middle income families....respresents their grocery money, house payments, education of their children, etc. How in the world do you equate this with racism? The original intent of the land the Ponca tribe purpose in Carter Lake....was
to build a medical clinic...wouldn't that be of greater benefit to the Ponca's?

You apparently (if I am wrong...I am sorry)go to the three casinos in Council Bluffs....the next time you go, please, take a REAL good look at the people in the casino....do they REALLY look like they can afford to
be there throwing thier money down the sewer?

Another casino is definitely not needed in the metro Omaha/Council Bluffs area. And it has absolutely NOTHING to do with racism....I would be saying the same thing if the investors out of Vegas or New Jersey were
funding another casino.

Thanks, for listening!! "
