Attorney General Jon Bruning has scheduled a news conference to give an update on his investigation into Nebraska gas stations trying to cheat customers.

Bruning will be joined Tuesday afternoon by Steve Malone. He's administrator of the Division of Weights and Measures.

Bruning said in May that he plans to prosecute station owners who deceive the public.

Malone said the most common trick is for stations to put ethanol blends in pumps labeled as regular, 100 percent gasoline. That way the stations can charge the extra 5 to 10 cents regular gas sells for compared to the common blend of 10 percent alcohol, 90 percent gas.

" Maybe he can explain why gas is 10-12 cents per gallon more expensive in lincoln also!? "

" One of Jon's priorities needs to be the gas stations in North Platte. We came back from California a few weeks ago, and it's clear they try to deceive you. If you have to spend more than five seconds linking the advertised gas prices to what pump offers that particular price, you know something is a little wacky. They also know that when the station is busy, you're less likely to play "musical cars" to try to get to the pump you want. I vowed then NEVER to buy gas in North Platte again, especially since they had "deception issues" not to long ago. It still continues. Thanks Jon! "

" I agree with "powed". We, too, recently went through North Platte on our way to and from Colorado. The gas was advertised as a certain price and then we got to the pumps and found that the advertised price was only at one pump. I remember reading about these tactics previously and thought the practice had been halted. Unfortuantely, it gives North Platte a bad name, because I know my husband and I will not be stopping in North Platt again either "

" Last Monday as we went through North Platte we saw the sign for $3.59 a gallon on the South side of the Intersate. When we got to the pumps we read the panel at $4.09 for 89 octane. We did find the one pump with 89 octane w/ ethanol for $3.59 after driving around the pumps for 5 minutes. As I pumped gas all I heard was people being upset at the price at the pumps. This is not good for Nebraska tourism, all they will remember is the gas rip off, not Nebraksa the good life. "

" Those deceitful gas stations in North Platte should be forced to close up for the rest of the year. Or spend one weekend selling gas at $1.99. That should take a few pretty pennies out of their greedy pockets!! "

" Its about time the gas stations were reviewed. Gas is so expensive today it should be randomely tested twice a year for quality of the pumps as well as the content mixtures. "

" For several years now I have made it my policy to never buy gas in N. Platte, Cozad, Gothenburg, or any of those little towns around there. They are bottom-feeding towns that live off the Interstate. I fill-up in Kearney, then again in Sidney or Kimball if necessary. "

" So Jon has now decided to take on all the dishonest gas station owners?

If my memeory serves correctly this has been going on for a couple of years now with Jon's office either issuing letters that what was being done isn't illegal. It is either legal or illegal Jon - you can't have it both ways (though you can throw interns under the bus to try to cover for you).
Either way Jon has taken a heck of a long time in doing anything about the stations in North Platte or anywhere else. I guess it has now become a political issue after prices skyrocketed over the last 6 months so therefore Jon has to drum up some dog and pony show to try and score votes by claiming that he is now 'tough' on gas station owners.

My prediction: these cases will implode the same way so many other cases have during Jon's tenure in office. Jon has suffered a couple of particularly humiliating defeats in serious felony cases in Lincoln and Dawes County within the last few months. Lets hope that his office can finally show a little trial competence and less political showmanship for a change. "
