KEARNEY — A 19-year-old Kearney man who struck a Kearney High School teacher must perform 100 hours of community service while on his two years of probation.

Jeremy Cabe had pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault charges.

Cabe and another student got into a dispute while playing basketball on school grounds in March.

Police say that when the 49-year-old teacher approached, Cabe punched her, knocking her unconscious. Other school employees received minor injuries when they tried to detain Cabe.

Judge Gerry Jorgensen of Buffalo County Court last week also ordered Cabe to continue counseling and taking his medications.

" This kid doesn't need 100 hours of community service. He needs a lot of anger management counseling, some time in some sort of detention house, and a good spanking that he probably should have gotten years ago as a kid!! "

" Having been in education for 17 years as both a teacher and an administrator I can tell you had it been the other way around, jail time would've been issued and a career ruined. I hope the teacher involved pursues this young man in civil court and is justly awarded future earnings for her trouble and suffering. I noticed he punched a woman. What a coward! "

" I think this kid needs to see the inside of prison walls for two years instead of probation. Probation in Nebraska is a joke. What is 100 hours of community service gonna teach him? I think prison time and a good spanking would do the boy some good. Teach him some respect for others. Just wait...we'll see his name again i'm sure. "
