The Lincoln City Council lifted a longtime ban on alcohol in city parks, but only during fundraisers for the parks department.

The council approved legislation allowing alcohol during events at Hazel Abel Park, Stransky Park, Sunken Gardens, Antelope Park Rose Garden and Pioneers Park Nature Center. City officials estimate only two or three events annually would be held.

Seven people testified in support of the ordinance last week, the police chief was neutral and nobody testified against.

" When will they allow us to drink at the State Parks?! If I pay $26 for a fishing permit, $20 for park entrance permit, I still am unable to drink a beer while fishing! "

" It'd be nice if they allowed alcohol in Pioneers park for a music festival. ...Only allow alcohol for parks department fundraisers? Isn't that being a little hypocritical? "

" How about allowing alcohol at Pinewood Bowl for concerts? A great asset sits unused because nobody wants to see a rock show without a beer. "

" Have you noticed that 4 out of the 5 parks are located in the central part of town and Pioneers. I am for any efforts to raise funds for the Park System, but I think Holmes Lake and other "suburban" parks should also be included. And I think a small bond be required to insure that the area's are clean up when they are finished. "

" MMMMMMMM oh yeah just got to have the booze in the parks. What would we do without that yummy booze. Wait.... I know, get drunk at such functions and drive home, maybe even hit a kid on the way out of the park. What a joke! Why is it that we MUST have booze to have an event? "

Ej wrote on August 11, 2008 6:23 pm:
" This is what our society has come to? Just got to have our booze. To avid angler-unfortunatly too many people out there can't just have a/one or two beers when they are fishing. The laughable thing is they sell beer at the marina at branched oak lake. "

Nina wrote on August 11, 2008 6:37 pm:
" Bicycle Mike, I think I have an answer for you. People MUST have booze at every event because so many have become people without substance, unable to entertain themselves and enjoy socializing on their own merits, instead relying on the crutch of alcohol. If more would realize and appreciate what they've been given as natural assets, they would lead better, more satisfying lives, I believe. I usually enjoy one beer a week at home, as my little reward for cleaning the house on Saturdays. But if I couldn't have that beer, it surely doesn't mean I'd instead live in a dirty house. I'm just pleased I have a comfy little home to fill with peace and welcome, and that's enough to make me happy. How about finding out if the 'real you' can have fun with your God-given resources, drinkers? And if not, there are a host of ways to learn how. "

" What a bunch of intrusive, over bearing, tee-totalers. Hell bent on running everyone's lives, yet you forget the greatest weapon you have-FREE WILL to not go or participate. Imagine the good works you all could do if you would stop worrying about what everyone else is doing. How ever do you all sleep at night knowing that I might be drinking in my home after the kids are in bed watching a MOVIE on CABLE that might have OBJECTIONABLE CONTENT? "

Shame wrote on August 11, 2008 8:24 pm:
" Goes to show you what kind of back bone that city council bunch has. Why
not just turn the whole damn town into one drunken brawl??!! There isn't
any place you can go and even take your kids anymore without a drunken
crappen mess. As one family told me today, Lincoln is about as liberal
a mess as you'll find in the whole U.S. I wouldn't spend a dime in this
town!! You have no respect for decent people, I have NO respect for
the leaders of this community!! "

Simpleton wrote on August 11, 2008 9:52 pm:
" Its not that people want the alcohol at the events or concerts so bad, but that its the only way for the promoter to make enough money to make it worthwhile. Pinewood bowl would be a great place for concerts, but it has to be profitable in order to do that. "

True Enough wrote on August 12, 2008 1:28 am:

I have no problem with the limited alcohol use approved by the City Council. It makes sense from all perspectives. "

City Council members, you have again amazed me. "

Red wrote on August 12, 2008 9:55 am:
" CS - right there with you...
And Shame....shame on you...Lincoln is far from liberal, and just because someone drinks does not make them an alcoholic...there are plenty of places to take your children with out it being a "drunken crappen (crappy) mess". If you aren't spending a dime in this town you must not live here - so keep your opinions to yourself. "

Wee Haw wrote on August 12, 2008 11:21 am:
" Sweet, we get to party at the Parks & Rec fundraisers once or twice a year. I'm sure those are just crazy parties no one will want to miss.

Is this decision a joke or what? There are outdoor concert venues all over the country but Pinewood Bowl continues to miss the bus.

Way to go City Council - this time you fell so incredibly short it's laughable. "

Doug Emery wrote on August 12, 2008 11:56 am:
" Please read the ordinance before blowing this into something it is NOT. The ordinance CLEARLY says that this would be allowed when the park was NOT open. Thus, unless you and you "kids" are in the park illegally, you will NEVER see the usage of alcohol. This is the same type hysteria that surrounded the decision to have alchol AVAILABLE on the golf course. According to the Police Chief, no problems have occured since those changes. "

KC wrote on August 12, 2008 11:57 am:
" I don't HAVE to have a beer at every event I go to, but I see nothing wrong with it being offered. It seems silly to me that you cant go to a state park WHERE YOU CAN CAMP AND NOT HAVE TO DRIVE, but get a hefty fine for drinking...but yet...they are going to allow alcohol at park fund raisers?? Like I've always said...I would sure rather see a drunken person stumble to their tent then to watch them stumble to their car.

And shame on you shame...the MAJORITY of us are responsible drinkers who don't necessaraly have to have alcohol, but it is nice that it's there if I choose to have a drink.

Oh..and by the way shame...there are ALOT of places to take your kids without alcohol and narrow minded people like you.
Don't put all of us in the same catagory as those drunken brawlers you're so worried about. "

Alan wrote on August 12, 2008 12:13 pm:
" I have an idea. Let's open the parks to alcohol and ban the kids. I just can't stand all those noisy little brats running around while I'm trying to enjoy a little nature. Isn't it enough that I pay taxes to educate your little demons and provide swimming pools? Can't I enjoy a quiet glass of wine at the park or a cold beer during a concert without a frontal assulat by the do-gooder busybody contingent? "

Bob wrote on August 12, 2008 12:34 pm:
" Wow, Lincoln's liberal? When did this happen? No offense, but you have to look far & wide to find some place any more conservative than here in this city/state. And FYI, decent people drink too...fairly fascinating how our council tries to maintain dignity and integrity by saying we'll allow this but not that. It's like, hey, we'll let a selective few wealthy have a party in our parks (but only 2-3 rimes a year-yeah right) but the rest of you-no way. I am thoroughly amused...curious if Cassidy is nuetral on booze for outdoor concerts...something tells me he isn't. "

Nina wrote on August 12, 2008 12:38 pm:
" Red, then there are those of us who spend thousands of dollars in Lincoln, and don't live here. Look at all the out-of-town, out-of-county license plates in Lincoln traffic, in Lincoln business parking areas. We need Lincoln, and believe it or not, it need us. "

Sad but true... wrote on August 12, 2008 1:04 pm:
" It seems there is an entire generation or so of folks that literally cannot have fun unless alcohol is involved. What a sad mess. You might think it's okay to have 1-2 beers after your kids go to sleep, but consider the message you're sending them by buying your cases of beer at the grocery store every week. (Kids aren't stupid... they know there's alcohol in the fridge even if you pretend you're drinking it when they're not around.) Ask yourself this... do you HAVE to have that beer every night in order for it to be a good day?! Have you tried a glass of water instead? Or maybe some fruit juice or even soda. Or does it HAVE to be alcohol? Pathetic! "

Tyler D wrote on August 12, 2008 2:37 pm:
" Interesting that while there are many of you complaining about this decision now, the article states that NO ONE testified against it at the meeting. "

DA wrote on August 12, 2008 3:52 pm:
" I agree, let's allow alcohol at the area lakes. That's why my husband and I travel to Kansas, Missouri, etc. so we can have a few cold ones while cruising on our boat, fishing and enjoying the lake. You know darn well that when some of the city council members are out at area lakes, they tip a few back!! "

wow wrote on August 12, 2008 3:54 pm:
" talk about a hypothetical situation, kids getting hit in the park by drunk drivers, I'm sure it could happen but couldn't it also happen in their own neighborhood? Also anyone ever think that alcohol has been in Lincoln parks before? People having a picnic with an innocent-looking bottle of coke, that isn't entirely coke. Just a thought. "

Bonne Vie wrote on August 13, 2008 8:46 am:
" Typical Nebraska government hypocrisy. Omaha's city government said smoking was bad, well...except in places where a ban would effect city keno revenue. The State says that gambling is bad...except when the Lottery profits go to the State, then it's advertised and encouraged. And now Lincoln has determined that alcohol in public parks continues to be bad...except when the parks dept can profit from it. Apparently some pigs ARE more equal than others. Where's Snowball when we need him? "
