Forward accepts Sadler's scholarship offer

Brandon Ubel didn’t take long to mull a scholarship offer from the Nebraska men’s basketball team.
Ubel, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound power forward from Overland Park, Kan., took an unofficial visit to Lincoln a week ago Monday. Nebraska offered, and Ubel said he accepted that day, becoming the second member of Doc Sadler’s 2009-10 recruiting class.
Then Ubel took a week’s vacation to visit his grandparents in California. When he returned, he began sharing his news.
“It felt right, the people were nice, the coaches were obviously great,” Ubel said of why he chose Nebraska. “Also, I want to go into broadcast journalism, and the journalism department was unbelievable.”
Ubel was already familiar with Nebraska because his sister, Kayla, is a member of the NU track team.
Ubel will be a senior this fall for Blue Valley West High School, which won the Class 6A state championship his sophomore season and lost in the first round of state last season.
“We graduated seven seniors last year, so it will be a rebuilding year, but it should be fun,” he said.
Ubel said his team doesn’t keep track of individual statistics, but said he averaged 20 points and eight rebounds this summer for his AAU team.
Ubel describes himself as a skilled big man.
“I can step out and shoot the three-pointer,” he said. “I’m a pretty good shooter. I can take slower guys off the dribble, I can post up smaller guys. Pretty versatile.”
Ubel also had scholarship offers from Drake, Illinois State and Utah State, and said Marquette and Stanford were showing serious interest.
As for playing for Sadler?
“I’ve heard he’s intense, and he said he’s intense, which is good, because he can get the best out of you,” Ubel said.
