Fremont group aims for illegal immigration policy
By The Associated Press
FREMONT — The co-chairman of a new Fremont-based task force on illegal immigration says he hopes the group can create policy that could be a benchmark for other communities.
But Bill Ekeler says the group must first ensure any proposed solutions don’t conflict with state or federal laws.
Representatives from the group plan to meet with Rep. Jeff Fortenberry on Monday as part of that process. The meeting follows one with Gov. Dave Heineman, Attorney General Jon Bruning and representatives from Fortenberry’s and Sen. Ben Nelson’s offices last week.
The group’s formation follows the City Council’s failed attempt last month to approve a measure that would have banned renting to, harboring and hiring illegal immigrants.

The task force has 'no' legal status....and the members of the task force are 'all' people friendly to the approach on illegal immigration as our mayor. And our mayor is being opposed by two write-in type candidates in the November general election. Sadly, our mayor had to bring in a younger
well educated business owner (Bill Ekeler)to help him through this situation because it is way way way beyond the mental ability of our 76 or 77 year old mayor. Whatever the task force decides will be of little or no benefit to Fremont....why? We have NO local laws on illegal immigration, etc., what are they wasting their time going through the process? Answer: Our mayor is up for re-election, and one of our city council members on the task force...wants to be the next mayor; thus they have to give the appearance of "we are doing something." As it stands now...this whole illegal immigrant situation in Fremont....is a FEDERAL government issue....end of story!! "
