When the Blue team raced to 91 points Monday in the Nebraska Coaches Association all-star girls’ basketball game, one might think the offense would draw the biggest raves.

But the Blue defense deservedly got praise from coach Rick Chramosta of Minden. That’s because the defense hounded the Red team, forcing it to shoot just 30.9 percent from the field, en route to a 91-61 victory at Lincoln North Star.

“Our defense played well. We thought we needed to slow their guards,” Chramosta said. “Nicole Brungardt did a good job on Katie Birkel and slowed her quite a bit.”

Brungardt, of Norfolk Catholic, had three steals and also added three assists to help the Blue. Birkel, of Lincoln Southeast, never got untracked and scored just five points.

Cheryl Braithwait of Arapahoe and Debi Johnson of Perkins County led the Blue team with 12 points apiece, LeaAnn Jameson of Minden added 11 and Heather Pohl of Millard West had 10. Alicia Statler of Grand Island Central Catholic led the way with 12 rebounds.

Brittany Gunn of Omaha Burke took scoring honors with 16 points, and Eva Benson of Overton added 12 points and also had 11 rebounds for the Red team.
