A state agency that keeps track of spending by public colleges and universities will consider the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s request to use state money to maintain part of the South Stadium Office Building.

The operation of the building used to be paid for by the athletic department. But now, parts of the building are used by the Computer Science and Engineering Department.

The Coordination Commission for Postsecondary Education will consider the request at its meeting Thursday.

According to its Web site, the commission is a state agency whose mission is to balance the best interests of taxpayers, students and the state’s public colleges and universities.

" As usual I inferred too much from the headline and was mad. Now I see they are probably just wanting someone else to clean up after engineering students. Seems harmless to me, but some people will read the headline and go crazy about the bloated athletic department using tax money.

Let the complaining begin... "

" There seems to be a strange fit; another disaster by Perlman that his house of cards has produced? These backdoor routes to funding and building have left both the state and UNL with a flawed sense of accomplishment and budget pressures. The Regents aren't keeping things transparent as they should and so the McCrisis is the result of a strategy that has come back to haunt lawmakers. "

" Why is the Computer Science and Engineering Department located in the stadium anyways? It would seem that athletics could use that space for something. "

" The whole State benefits from these computers and without them some of the research and other important venues at the University would not get accomplished. I support this effort. This is a necessary investment. "

" The athletic department donated this building to Computer Science. Then CS got money to renovate the building. They moved equipment from the Miller and Paine building downtown to this building. The athletic department got new coaches offices when they added on the North side of the stadium. This is part of the athletic dept giving back to unl. So please dont complain about this I am sure it will add up to pennies. "

" Make sure you read the whole story before you comment. Since the Athletic Dept. built the Osborne complex (through private donations...NOT taxpayer funds) to hold their coaches' offices, they don't use their old space anymore. So the old space was given to the Computer Science & Engineering programs (ACADEMIC programs, nothing Athletic).

The ACADEMIC side of UNL is asking for funds to maintain what are now ACADEMIC facilities. Or would you rather UNL build a whole new Computer Science/Engineering building that would cost taxpayers 10x as much??? Think before you type... "

" but since the new complex was built in the old field house. Computer science got to use the building. So this is really an academic building occupying space in the football stadium...yes I am a UNL student and the new front to South stadium looks beautiful...To Dee football pays for all the other sports here on campus and we are one of the few athletic programs to operate in the Black fiscally. So the UNL athletic dept. does give back. reading people's opinions about UNL makes me glad that once I graduate I dont need to feel sorry when I walk out of this state to one that appreciates the talents I have to offer. And take my tax contributions with me. You reap what you sow Nebraska "

" The building is now called the Schorr Center,

It houses many researchers, research projects and faculty offices as well as graduate student work areas. There is nothing sports related in the building anymore. "

" It's funny, something is earned or donated to the athletic department and all of a sudden it's treated like private money. The athletic department is part of the greater public institution. Athletic money is public money. If money donated to the athletic department or the UNL foundation is public money. "

Sam wrote on August 8, 2008 8:49 am:
" I see NO reason why the athletic dept. can't help out the rest of the University. They rake in the money and them keep it to themselves. What happened to being part of the whole UNL team? "

Where is the UNL Money wrote on August 8, 2008 8:07 pm:
" I'm getting rather surley about the whispers I keep hearing reguarding UNL. They just ousted the State Fair, so they must have some money of there own to do this. Why? are they asking this state for any monies? We should not be supporting UNL. UNL should support ITSELF. I would like this to come up for a vote. So that we can all vote a big fat NO on this. If they are hurting for money they should have thought about that before buying out the Fair! "

Fair fan wrote on August 8, 2008 10:44 pm:
" Nope, they don't need a penny of my money. After all, they stole the state fair park and saved millions by not paying market value, so they can just use that savings for anything else they want. If it's necessary, then they can dip into their pot of gold, if not, then they can do without. "
