FREMONT — Another Fremont man is making a bid for the city’s mayoral seat, saying he was motivated by a recently failed effort to crack down on illegal immigration.

Carl Schaffner never before considered a run for an elected position, but says he knew he needed to do it after the City Council voted down an ordinance that would have banned renting to, harboring and hiring illegal immigrants. Mayor Skip Edwards’ vote broke the tie.

The 48-year-old has until Sept. 2 to collect 1,419 signatures from registered voters living in the city.

He is the second to announce his intent to challenge Edwards in the November election. Wesley Homes filed an affidavit with the Dodge County Clerk’s Office last week to run as a write-in candidate.

" I don't understand it. These guys can run all they want, and even get elected, but when it all comes down to it they are very small fish in a very large and expensive pond, and all their posturing isn't going to do anything but cost the city money when they get sued in Federal Court. They can't enforce their mandates even if they pass and they are looking at Civil Right's violations for every case that gets adjudicated. "

" No sure i'm following you cs. Are you saying to not stand up for what you believe in? Maybe running won't make a difference but at least these guys are stepping up and walking the walk. Maybe I'll stay home during the election since my vote doesn't really matter. "

" If they 'really' believed in this, where were they for the last, oh 10 years+ that this has been an issue? All I see is typical midwest, uninformed, xenophobia. "

" I'd like to congratulate the two guys who have come forward to take a stand publicly on a very important issue. Maybe it is events like the one in Fremont to get more people involved in the political debate. So to them and anyone else that comes forward to run I say, Congrats! Hopefully one of these two will be able to unseat the current mayor. The state and nation will be watching. "

" I think I'll run for mayor here in Lincoln. We need someone here with a little courage to stand up and for our own "avengers" here in town. And I'll put forward the "Lincoln and State of NE Illegal Immigrant Act" as well... "

" That mayor was previously running unopposed, and I never like uncontested incumbents running for re-election, regardless of party. "

" let's see, everyone wants an act that bans hiring illegals, that already exists, a ban against harboring illegals, again already exists, a ban on renting to illegals, that is against federal law, so what , if anything , are these people trying to do other than get their 15 minutes of fame. "

" Let's try an experiment: Let's run off all of the Mexican immigrants and see what happens. Let's see how many construction projects grind to a halt, how many motel rooms get cleaned, how much meat gets processed, how much miscellaneous grunt work gets done. When "real" Americans have to start digging deeper into their pockets to pay more for everyday items (or go without those items), then we will find out how they REALLY feel about immigration. And don't bother with the "illegal" vs "legal" distinction. We all know that this is just cover for anti-Mexican bias. The Republicans don't really care about justice or equality, but they know that stricter immigration laws will hurt corporate profits. Moreover, without Mexicans, the rich may have to make their kids mow the lawn...now that would be tragic! "

" At least the current mayor was strong enough to vote against the radicals that hate what America stands for. If they want people to buy a permit showing they are legal citizens to rent and work, why not extend it to all citizens of Fremont. Make every one that wants to live and work there, prove they are legal citizens of the US by purchasing that permit or sell their houses and get out. Anything short of that is discrimination. "

" Used to be GOP - It is an anti-Mexican tirade. They are the ones with the most illegals and the largest influx of ANY nationality. Sure, prices would go up, but so would wages. They would have to go up in order to get the work needed accomplished. So it's a win/win situation!! "
