The Huskers worked out on the grass without pads for their second practice of fall camp Tuesday.

“We’re not going to be satisfied until we see perfection out there, so we’re way far away from having that,” Husker coach Bo Pelini said. “But we see some guys getting better, getting a chance to know some of the newcomers and see what they can do and where they fit. It’s been a productive couple of days.”

Asked about the four freshman recruits from the 2008 class who aren’t cleared to play yet — David Whitmore, Justin Rogers, Antonio Bell and David Grant — Pelini said: “It’s kind of a work in progress. We’ve got a few weeks until school starts. That’s kind of the date. We’re kind of at the clearinghouse of the NCAA, waiting for test scores back, that type of thing.”

Injury report: True freshman Micah Kreikemeier, from West Point Central Catholic, blew out his knee this summer, so he’ll redshirt this season.

Junior tight end Tyson Hetzer, a junior-college recruit who sat out much of the spring with a knee injury, is not on the 105-man fall roster but is close to a full recovery.

“We suspect he’ll be healthy probably in the next 10 days, two weeks,” Pelini said. “Just, obviously with that injury, he wasn’t quite ready yet, so we decided not to put him in the 105.”

Pelini didn’t have a timetable on when offensive lineman Jaivorio Burkes might return.

“We’ll see,” he said. “It’s more of a medical issue.”

Scouting report, QB Zac Lee: “We feel good about that whole group (of quarterbacks). Time will tell,” Pelini said. “The competition is good. We’ll see how it works as the game goes on.”

Question of the day: Will senior running back Kenny Wilson — who suffered a broken leg before last season and hasn’t played since 2006 — ever play again for Nebraska?

It doesn’t look good. Husker running backs coach Tim Beck said Wilson has been reduced to a volunteer/student coaching role because of a lingering leg injury.

“It’s been frustrating for him,” Beck said. “He’s a great young man. I feel for him. He wants to help out in any way he can.”
