Doane College launched an incentive program effective July 1 that gives new, permanent, full-time faculty members $5,000 to put toward a down payment if they choose to live in Crete. The program aims to build a stronger Crete community: Only about 40 percent of Doane faculty live in Crete, while many of the rest commute from Lincoln or other cities.

Two new faculty members are eligible to take advantage of the incentive program this year, but neither has, said Maureen Franklin, dean of the faculty. At least one has decided to live in Lincoln; Franklin did not know where the other will live.

The new faculty will be eligible for the incentive program for several years, Franklin said, so they still could decide to settle down in Crete. Further, she’s confident the program will take off: “It’s a good program. I think we’ll have some takers on it. So we’ll wait and see.”

" Coming from experience of living in the crete community and going to school at Doane if you are not used to small town living it doesn't matter what incintive you get. Crete is a small town and has small town politics. The people who do take this probably would have lived in crete anyways. If you live in south lincoln it is only at 20 minute drive. "

" Doane is a great school. However Crete has little to offer. After living there for 4 years and working at a restaurant downtown, I can honestly say there aren't too many pleasant people in that town. There is definitely racial profiling that occurs within law enforcement, schools, and also local land lords. I would never live in Crete no matter what the incentive program offered. If it were not for the school, I don't think Crete would be much of anything. "

" Nice try on trying to get people to move to the Crete community, but if you're not from Crete then you're not going to be accepted. It's like Mayberrry with Sheriff Griffith and Officer Fife. You can have a great job at Doane, but you want to go home to a great house with great neighbors in a great community also. Just remember it's not always about they money. "

" It's not only Crete, but Beatrice, Seward, Milford, etc. It's the way it is in small towns..................Doesn't matter the color of your skin, age, martial status. Talk to anyone from these communities, they will say the same thing - every town in a Mayberry RFD when it comes to some personalities. But........great way of life if you can put aside the fact that you are not the center of attention. "

" I don't live in Crete, but my kids go to school there and we send a lot of time there and are involved with many activities in the area. All I can say is that in my experience, people who complain about "cliques" and "nothing to do" just make no effort to get involved in the community. It doesn't matter where you're from, if you don't try to be a part of the towm, don't expect the town to come to you.

People don't need to be down on Crete. I've seen a lot of towns this size in NE, and Crete has more going for it than most. Good college, good public schools, and they are making the immigration situation work better than most towns of any size. "
