Sampson Construction took advantage when Alex Jones had a brief lapse, but the Union Bank pitcher knew just what he had to do.

“I was locating well in the eighth and then I got two quick outs in the ninth. Then I made two mistakes,” Jones said. “After that, I trusted my coaches and my catcher and threw to spots and let it work out.”

Union Bank (Lincoln Pius X) withstood Sampson’s uprising to earn a 6-5 victory Wednesday at Sherman Field in the first round of the Class A Area 5 American Legion Senior Baseball Tournament.

Union Bank will face the winner of Wednesday’s Pinnacle Bank-U-Stop game Thursday at 8 p.m. In the other winners’ bracket game, Anderson Ford will take on JC Brager at 5 p.m. Anderson Ford outlasted Dinsdale Auto 7-6 in 13 innings and JC. Brager earned a 3-2 win against Judds Brothers. Elimination games are set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

After Jones got two outs, Jeremy Philippi singled and scored on Mike Matzen’s second double of the game for Sampson (Lincoln High). But Jones settled down and got a strikeout to get the save.

“When they got their four-run inning, we knew to just trust in what we did all season,” Jones said. “We finally got our hits, got the lead and were able to shut them down.”

Union Bank broke on top in the third when starting pitcher Ben Raun walked, advanced on a hit by Aaron Molinaro and scored on a groundout by Eric Schleppenbach.

Sampson got four runs in the fifth inning on five hits to take the lead. Philippi singled in a pair of  runs and Matzen doubled in two more.

Union Bank cut the deficit with a single run in the sixth when Schleppenbach doubled, advanced on a fly ball and scored on a balk.

Raun, Molinaro and Schleppenbach each drove in runs and Molinaro stole home in a four-run seventh inning to lift Union Bank into the lead.

“Games like this are to be expected in the Lincoln district,” said Union Bank coach Troy Charf. “There’s no good draw, because you know every team is going to just keep battling. You have to tip your hat to Sampson because they didn’t quit.”

Sampson coach Joe Fagler credited Union Bank’s aggressiveness in their big inning.

“They got a baserunners on and then executed. We didn’t get the out on the bunt and they executed and turned it into a big inning,” Fagler said. “In our four-run inning, we got some big two-out hits. But we had three straight innings where we got our leadoff hitter on and bunted him over and then don’t get a hit. That hurts.”

Top-seeded Anderson Ford (North Star) needed 13 innings to topple Dinsdale Auto (Southeast). Joe Hartley scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Ricky Ideus, who struck out 13 in 10 innings of pitching. Ideus surrendered six runs on seven hits in the first two innings, then cruised, allowing just one hit and walking two in the next eight innings.

Nate Wilder came on in relief in the 11th and picked up the victory. Jacob Hiatt drove in three runs for Anderson Ford.

JC Brager (Southeast) survived a ninth-inning rally by Judds Brothers (Northeast) to advance. Judds threatened by loading the bases and scoring a pair of runs on an error before Josh Scheffert, who went the distance and struck out nine, got a groundout to end the game.

Brager scored what proved to be the winning run in the eighth inning when Travis Miller singled, then advanced and scored on a pair of errors.

" Dinsdale, the bottom seeded team takes the top seeded team into 13 innings and you don't even mention a Dinsdale player. Why isn't this story newsworthy? "

" Tom, Dinsdale isn't in Lincoln if I'm correct and that is why there is no mention. Most people have never heard of Dinsdale around here. "

" The sponsor is not from Lincoln. Regardless of the sponsor, this IS a Lincoln team with Lincoln athletes. This seems to be some bizare criteria on how to report local sports. Isn't the news about what's going on regardless of name recognition? "

" Dinsdale has played with more heart and emotion than any team in this tournament so far. They don't get any respect from any other Lincoln Class A teams, yet when the call was made this winter to schedule a game, the only Lincoln team that agreed to play them in the city was Judds Brothers, and they got mercied. There are just as many fine athletes on this team as the other Class A teams. They showed it by taking the top seed to 13 innings, and then losing to Judds in the bottom of the ninth today. These kids earned some respect. "

" While I do believe it is special that the bottom seed took the top seed to 13 innings, the reality is that the top seed beat the bottom seed - end of story. An upset is a newsworthy story, but a game going the way it was predicted (regardless of how many innings) does not carry as much weight. It's not about one team getting more or less respect than another team - quit blowing things out of context. At the end of the day, it's just a high school sport, not life or death. "

" Interesting comment from Forest-true the game ended not in an upset- but a couple of comments why then the huge story about Union Bank being extended by Sampson. Have you heard the old adage its not if you won or lost but how you played the game, Dinsdale Auto is a story its a team of kids from several high schools that supposedly wasnt good enough to make their prospective legion teams, that had an option to continue to play the game they enjoyed. Not only did they come together as a team but they grew as teammates and showed that they could indeed be competitive. "

" The seeding doesn't tell the true story. Dinsdale is the automatic 8th seed because they are a "B" team. Dinsdale actually had the best record of any other team in Lincoln going into districts. These are guys that either don't make the "A" team or don't even try-out for the "A" team. They definitely played their hearts out. Tough losses. News worthy...i think so. "

" I was at the Anderson Ford / Dinsdale game and I can tell you they did earn some respect that day. Not for pushing the top seed to 13 innings but for the way they played as a team, played with confidence, and their coaches made some great moves during the game, getting out of two bases loaded no out jams. It is unfortunate that the players did not get mentioned by name for hitting a double, a home run or driving in some runs. Articles have to be concise, and the the writer must have felt that a team holding an opponent scoreless for 11 innings, striking out 17 combined batters and coming from 6 runs down in the second inning was bigger than the fast start by the underdog and couple of players who may have had multiple hits in the game. It was a great baseball game for both teams. "
