OMAHA — A 73-year-old Omaha Catholic nun sentenced to three to five years for theft is now saying she wants to withdraw her plea.

Sister Barbara Markey says she wants a new trial or to receive a new sentence.

Prosecutors say Markey embezzled more than $250,000 from the Archdiocese.

She was fired as director of the archdiocese’s Family Life Office in January 2006 after irregularities arose during an audit.

Her attorney, Bill Gallup, says she did not enter her plea knowingly. Gallup also says a letter from the archdiocese may have influenced the judge’s sentence.

" So after we see what the sentence will be she wants to withdraw the plea. I love the way people's minds work. I'd say she new better and 3-5 sounds pretty tame for $250,000. In her profession she can't say she didn't know any better. I say let the ruling stand. "

" How does a nun not knowingly enter a guilty plea? Guilty? Innocent? Aren't these the bedrock of the Catholic church? "

" Why is she still a nun? "

" The mulilevels of irony and hypocricy in this story are just remarkable. When you put this story along side the many stories of child sexual abuse by priests in the Catholic church, I would think it would give great pause to even devout Catholics about their selection and oversight of clergy. They've spent endless years arguing about allowing clergy to marry or if a member of the clergy can be a gay person, that they've missed the larger point. Does their clergy even obey the laws of the United States. "

" A product of Catholic Education, I can tell you that these folks (Priests and Nuns) tend to live in their own little world. I'm not bashing them... there are lots of good ones out there, especially here in Nebraska. But when it comes to the Law of Man having effect over their behavior, they seem to prefer the Law of God which is far more forgiving. "

" Maybe you could take all that money and donate it to all of the people who are raped by priests.

Maybe you could use it for treatment programs for priests who are addicted to pornography, alcohol, and drugs. "
