Marcus to take over theater project at Midtown Crossing in Omaha
Marcus Theatres, which bought most of Douglas Theatres assets in Nebraska earlier this year, said it is taking over an agreement to design and manage a five-screen, four-level upscale theatre and entertainment complex in Midtown Crossing at Turner Park, a 15-acre, mixed-use urban development project owned by Mutual of Omaha in Omaha.
The new theatre is scheduled to open in November 2009.
“The project was in discussion and letter-of-intent stage when we purchased Douglas and we were assigned their letter of intent,” said Marcus spokesman Carlo Petrick. “We then completed negotiations with the owner/developer and entered into the formal management agreement. “
The theater will be off Farnam Street between 32nd and 33rd streets on the south edge of the development.
The Midtown Crossing site is bordered by 31st and 33rd streets, and by Dodge and Harney streets.
Bruce J. Olson, president of Marcus Theatres, said in a press reelase guests will enter the theatre on the ground level and take an escalator to the second level, which will feature a “trendy, posh cocktail lounge.”
The second level will also feature meeting space for private events or business meetings, said Olson.
At the third level, guests will enter the theater space, which consists of the box office, a lobby featuring a baby grand piano and five auditoriums.
In each auditorium, guests will be able to dine from an extensive menu, the company said, supported by a full wait staff.
Each auditorium also has traditional seating so guests have the option of attending the fim without dining during the film, Olson added.
The highlight of the new Midtown Crossing theatre, he said, is the fifth auditorium, which will be the largest seating capacity and includes VIP reserved seating in the balcony level.
The mezzanine level, from which people will enter the reserved VIP balcony section, will feature another lounge with Omaha skyline views, the company said.
Last month, Marcus Theatres closed on an acquisition of approximately 11 acres of vacant land in the Southport West development in La Vista. Both the Midtown Crossing and the Southport West developments follow the acquisition by Marcus Theatres of seven Douglas Theatres in Omaha and Lincoln on April 3.
Midtown Crossing is owned by Mutual of Omaha and developed by ECI Investment Advisors.
