Perot Systems will be bringing about 150 new jobs with an average salary of $50,000 to Lincoln as part of a consolidation of its local operations to a new building at the University of Nebraska Technology Park.

The Texas-based information technology company announced Tuesday that it plans to build a 150,000-square-foot building on about 21 acres at the Technology Park to house 750 of its Lincoln employees who are now spread out at seven sites across the city. About 250 employees will remain at a site near 16th and Old Cheney Road

The Technology Park site also will house 150 additional employees to be hired in Lincoln and leave room for another 200 jobs to be created in the future, said Mike Kerrey, executive vice president of insurance and business process solutions at Perot Systems.

About Perot Systems

What it is: Fortune 1000 company that provides information technology and business solutions services to industries such as healthcare, banking and insurance.

Headquarters location: Plano, Texas

Employees: more than 23,000 employees in 20 countries, including about 1,000 in Lincoln and 70 in Omaha.

History: Founded in 1988 by Texas billionaire Ross Perot. Bought Lincoln’s TAG/TMI in 2005.

About the Tech Park

What it is: Joint effort of the University of Nebraska, its foundation and the private sector. Its mission is to foster interaction between technology businesses and the university by helping transfer university-generated technology to the private marketplace, to nurture technology-based start-up companies and to promote technology-based economic development.

Location: Northwest Lincoln, adjacent to Highlands near Superior Street and Interstate 180.

Size: 150 acres, currently home to 18 companies with 1,000 employees in buildings comprising 257,000 square feet of space.

Major tenants: Verizon Wireless, Cabela’s

History: Founded in 1996, the park housed mostly small technology firms and startup companies until 2001, when Cabela’s opened its credit card processing center there. In 2007 Verizon Wireless opened a call center at the park that will eventually employ about 800 people.

“When we began looking for a way to bring our team together in one location, the University of Nebraska Technology Park proved to be the best fit, allowing us to strengthen our presence in Lincoln while also providing the required space for new job creation,” said Kerrey, a Lincoln native.

The jobs to be created are part of Perot’s infrastructure solutions unit, which is based at the company’s headquarters in Plano, Texas. Those jobs will include systems engineers and administrators to work with the Perot’s computer systems.

Most of the Lincoln employees currently do work in administrative and business services for insurance companies as part of Perot’s insurance and business  solutions division.

Local and state officials said they were excited to bring what they called “high-tech, high quality” jobs to Lincoln.

“These are jobs that will have a dramatic impact on 150 families in Lincoln and a dramatic effect on the Lincoln economy in general,” said Mayor Chris Beutler.

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman called Perot’s announcement an example of the state’s growing “competitiveness in ‘new economy’ jobs.”

“The jobs being created by Perot Systems in the coming years are exactly the kind of high-tech jobs we are trying to attract to Nebraska,” Heineman said.

Wendy Birdsall, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce president, said the company’s choice of  the Capital City for expansion, “validates Lincoln as a major destination for major corporate investment and technology employment.”

Kerrey said Perot Systems, which has more than 23,000 employees in 20 countries, looked at several cities for the expansion of the infrastructure solutions unit.

Lincoln won out, he said, because of the company’s success here as well as the opportunity to build a new building and take advantage of various economic incentives.

In addition, Kerrey said the company hopes a location in the Technology Park will allow collaboration between Perot and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on employee referrals, internships and software development.

Perot’s estimated investment in the two-story building, which will be southwest of where Verizon Wireless built its call center,  is $27 million — $23 million for construction of the building, $4 million in equipment and furnishings.

The city has estimated that the project will qualify for about $3 million in tax-increment financing, which allows the increase in property taxes created by the project to be used for public improvements to the area.

Perot also plans to seek state tax incentives available under the Nebraska Advantage Act, but Kerrey said he did not know the details.

Because the project involves TIF, it must go through various city approvals, and an initial hearing is scheduled at the Lincoln-Lancaster Planning Commission is tentatively scheduled for July 30.

City Council approval would be needed after that, and officials estimated that if everything goes smoothly, construction on the building could be under way by late summer or early fall.

Perot Systems hopes to be up and running in the new building by the third quarter of next year, when it will start hiring for the new infrastructure solutions jobs.

Once completed, the building will be the largest at the Technology Park, which opened in 1996, and Perot Systems will become the park’s largest employer.

Perot Systems came to Lincoln in 2005, when it bought  Technical Management Inc. and its subsidiary Transaction Applications Group, more well known as TAG.

The company also operates in Omaha, where it employs about 70 people since it expanded there last year.

" I just had to comment. If you do not work for Perot Systems - TAG then you have no idea what you are talking about. The average salary for thier employees here in Lincoln is not $50K. In fact, they declined to give many teams a raise because money was short even though it was published on our little perot systems website that the company made a millions the last year. These jobs aren't IT jobs, they are phone support and data entry type processing positions where you process insurance claims or issue annuity policies. Sit on a computer and enter information, all day, every day. They do outsource to India and other countries. This article makes this company look like shining stars when anyone who works there knows that the information is extremely inflated. "

Another Employee wrote on July 22, 2008 6:25 pm:
" I agree with all employees who have commented. What makes me really upset is that most employees who work there barely make enough money to put food on the table, yet Perot makes millions of dollars. We were told last week that they do not adjust wages according to the cost of living, yet every quarter they report how many millions they make and they have their employees to thank. If you want to thank us, pay us what we deserve! Well gas and food prices continue to rise, we sit there making the bare minimum or what they say "poverty level". In fact, we get paid the lowest out of all insurance companies in Lincoln. It is not fun going to work everyday worrying if your job is going to India or not. I think they need to take care of their current employees before hiring more. "

CS wrote on July 22, 2008 6:36 pm:
" And if you aren't middle or upper management what qualifies you to discuss what you 'think' they are doing with 150 new positions? There are many things that happen where I work, too, and I don't presume to know everything, and we only have 20 people working in our office. Any new jobs in Lincoln, especially those that aren't hog tied to a local only entity is a good thing. Phone support and data processors don't make very much money-there is a reason for that. "Systems Admin and System Engineer" is pretty far away from "phone support" and "data processing". There is little reason to give raises to entry level position. That's because they expect you to move up or move on-it's the same in any job, at least in the private world. "

To be honest wrote on July 22, 2008 6:39 pm:
" I can see why several of the disgruntle employees of Perot aren't making "$50k" and I don't think it's because of the company.

The article says "Perot Systems will be bringing about 150 new jobs with an average salary of $50,000 to Lincoln." I don't seem to remember reading that "thier (sic)" average salary is $50k. So, I can kinda understand the company's rationale if this is typical of the poorly paid employees.

Anyway, good news for Lincoln. Lots of construction dollars, and "NEW" average salary jobs of $50k. I'm one to be positive about it (and I make $56k...positive attitude, give it a try!). "

JRP wrote on July 22, 2008 7:54 pm:
" This is a great thing for Lincoln! The salary is an average so there will be a lot of jobs at opposite ends of the pay scale (starting, probably around $25K and System Engineers who start around $80K). Now if we can just find more companies willing to come here... "

Who knows....Apparently Not You wrote on July 22, 2008 8:19 pm:
" Maybe the 150 new jobs will be higher skilled jobs and not the $25k/yr jobs that they currently house. Also, everyone I know at Perot is making much closer to that average and I even know a few in the $70-80k range. So apparently they do have good jobs and we are only hearing from those that are doing the data entry, claim processing type work rather then the IT level that they talk about bring in.

Also, as I have been in the 'tech world' in Lincoln/Omaha for the past 10 years I would say that we have plenty of high tech jobs in this area and they are paying 'high tech' wages. So maybe some people commenting here aren't looking hard enough, not qualified, bad interviews or have a poor attitude (most likely the attitude from what it sounds like).

You would probably be suprised how many companies are out there. But you have to go find them as they aren't advertising in the old fashioned newspaper. Try networking for once rather then complaining... "

" Sorry, CS but you are wrong. There are people at PerotSystems, formerly TAG who have been there for years, who have "moved up", who have acquired higher skill sets who still aren't making $50K/year and many, many of those are in IT. With the whopping 1-3% salary increases we got this year, no wonder it's possible to build a new building. The salary structure across the board is as minimalist as possible to include that paid to the people who make the company actually run.
Unless you work there or have worked there, you know not whereof you speak. "

These are our Co-Workers and they did not take our jobs. Some Processes moved to India so we here in Lincoln could add more work adn hire additional employees.

In Lincoln, we do service for other companies. These insurance companies hire a company like Perot to provide service to their clients so as they can continue to grow their business by developing new products and continuing to Sell their product.

It is a shame that someone that has no concept of what Perot Systems in Lincoln does has the nerve to make comments bashing a pretty good company. Oh and 1 more thing....Pay is not everything, benefits, hours flexiblity also weigh in heavily. I know absolutely nobody that says they should not make more money. Keep that in mind when reading comments from peoploe that are just not happy people.

" Certainly 150 new jobs is good news. The 50k average salary is good news too, provided we don't have a dozen or 2 employees making 6 figure incomes thus skewing the "average" and the bulk of the jobs are barely living wage jobs. I don't know, seems to me the JS would investigate this further. The whole thing that bothers me about this situation is that it seems we have the public sector financing in part work that the private sector should be doing in it's entirety. The idea of a Technology Park is to provide an incubator for new ideas I would think. Not a publically financed "farm system" to utilize "interns" and gain a competitive edge over your rivals with less than market rates for employees that your rivals may not have access to. Doesn't seem like "free enterprise" to me. How much am I a missing here? "

And what an elitist attitude to say data processors don't make very much money---there's a reason for it. I also do my own trouble-shooting of both my software and hardware problems, find work arounds if possible, and after I do all the work to diagnose the problem, tell our system analyst what needs to be down to fix it, and he then takes credit for it. Most system admins spend at least 1/4 of their day discussing the latest sports, another 1/4 making golf plans and another good part of the day in meetings consuming mass quantities of coffee and donuts. Meanwhile, people in our office would rather talk to our lowly data processing staff, than talk to the head honchos who just blow them off. "

I may not always like my job, no one loves their job everyday, but it is not that horrible either. The pay is adequate again I have only been there a couple of years but I have proved my worth and been given a raise each year. The benefits (health insurance dental insurance vision insurance) are WONDERFUL! My old employer’s health insurance did not cover much and no dental or vision but more per week was taken out of my paycheck than here. Perot is always TREATING associates to free lunches, ice cream parties, not to mention this year associates were given free tickets to the Omaha Zoo as well as other things they typically do to try to make associates feel appreciated. Most do but the few cry babies’ on this blog make us all look bad. I am on vacation this week. What I can't believe is how many of the complainers are spending company paid time to come on here and vent. Maybe if you were doing your job instead you would feel better about yourself? I love my job with Perot and plan to retire there. Anyone that says it is a company that does not care is never going to find one that does. I know many people at big companies in town. Some are better paid but hate to go to work. Your job is what YOU make it. If you think someplace else would be better please try one of them your co-workers would probably appreciate the whiner leaving. Perot Systems is an equal opportunity employer and very fair to ALL associates regardless of age, sex, race and religion. You just cannot make some people happy. I have seen some people lose their jobs there after way more warnings than they would have gotten from my past employer and the ones that have “lost” their jobs have deserved it! Thank you Perot Systems for giving us this new place to work it will be nice to have parking and be able to meet people that I hear about all the time but could pass in the street and not know who they are. I think this is great for Lincoln great for Perot Systems and GREAT for the Happy to have a good job Associates! "

" I love how only the people that DON'T work here think they have the right to have their opinion heard. If your experience doing your job makes you more knowledgable then my experience doing my job makes me more knowledgable...this company is bearable at best. "

" So explain why certain employees get demerits or whatever if they have a sick child (because a child will give you 48 hour notice) or if you are sick your self? Check the handbook. It says 48 hours. So, heaven help if you or your child gets sick because yes you could potentially get fired for it. "

" the titles of positions are also inflated. Like I said, if you don't and haven't worked there - no business commenting. Yes, more jobs to Lincoln is good. Lying to the public about the quality and ranking of these jobs - bad. "

" I hope you realize that evaluations to get money are just a "popularity contest" You may work hard and be rewarded but some people like myself work very hard and an bias supervisor decides not to give you a good evaluation thus no raise of pay.

So before you go calling people babies just consider yourself lucky you are on the "positive side" with your boss. At my job I had to get an attorney just to help prove I'm right. I've won several greivances and had 4 or more rules changed because they said I was wrong. I work for the city and it is so bias at my organization that I won't even go there. In fact just these last few months my supervisor changed the scores of two coworkers to not get a raise that was even after they had had their evaluation from another lower supervisor and were told of getting a raise. This is a bad supervisor not a bad worker!

The point being all of us like jobs, want the best benefits possible but we can not just "jump ship". Yes just consider yourself lucky or blessed and don't upset or criticize others.

" For those of you who didn't READ the article, it said, "Those jobs will include systems engineers and administrators to work with the Perot’s computer systems." This would pertain to the "high end" jobs, at $80,000 and not the data entry positions, at minimum wage, or slioghtly above. Know the facts before you start ranting and raving!! "

" To "Nope Youre Wrong", let me first say you are definitely wrong on this one. The jobs coming to Lincoln are new and are from the IS division of Perot Systems. These will be good paying IT jobs (average 50k starting salary). These jobs are different than any currently at Perot Systems in Lincoln and are related in now way to the insurance industry as all of the current jobs at Perot in Lincoln are.

It would be nice if people just appreciated the fact that a company is willing to invest and bring jobs to Lincoln and that they don't speak as if they are knowledgable about something that they are in fact not knowledgable about. Celebrate that this is a good thing for our town. "

" Perhaps there is some whining here. But perhaps there is a failure in leadership as well. For those who think myopia can trump expeirience please consider the following. The salary commensurate with experience comment was so profoundly ignorant that it is comic. What data entry and phone service associates at Perot are expected to know and accomplish for 7-9/hour far exceeds what other comparable level jobs do given the minimal support. There is much more to a job than pay so maybe given the minimal support the associates are frustrated with having to take more time away from their families to accomplish tasks that should be able to be done during a normal week. Or the medical benefits which cost more and cover less than prior to Perot buying TAG. Or the leadership/planning/promotion process that seems to be influenced more by the Three Stooges than Warren Buffett. Or the salary increases that don't keep up with inflation even when we 'do our jobs.' A piece of pizza, a zoo ticket or an ice cream bar is HARDLY a substitute for a meaningful salary increase. Hardly a wonder that the existing associates don't see things through the rosy specs that other see them through. This is a great thing for Lincoln as a community-tremendous investment by Perot Systems. But to Perot Associates day to day it will be just the same story told in a different location. "

oh really is way off wrote on July 23, 2008 9:20 pm:
" Yes, you do get an occurance documented if you call in sick for work. You do not get fired after one time. If you have 4 'call ins' during a 3 month period you are written up and from there if you miss a whole lot more work, yes you can be fired.
But I challenge you to find a full time job where it doesn't matter if you show up or not. It's not like they are going to fire you if you call in once, you will be fired if it is a constant thing of missing work by calling in sick. Every place of business will do that. And if they don't they certainly won't be in business that terribly long
Also, demerits as you put it are not being fired. "

" oh really may want to check the hand book themselves. No where does it say you will be fired for calling in sick once. Yes, it is documented when you do call in, but that's why you are given 4 times every 3 months before it becomes a problem and action is taken. If you or your child are sick for the same reasons all the time, you can get on FMLA so you will always have a job.
But I do agree that you could get fired if you miss allot of work, but that would be the same for any other full time job. "
