Perot Systems adding 150 high-tech jobs, expanding at Tech Park
By MATT OLBERDING/Lincoln Journal Star
Perot Systems will be bringing about 150 new jobs with an average salary of $50,000 to Lincoln as part of a consolidation of its local operations to a new building at the University of Nebraska Technology Park.
The Texas-based information technology company announced Tuesday that it plans to build a 150,000-square-foot building on about 21 acres at the Technology Park to house 750 of its Lincoln employees who are now spread out at seven sites across the city. About 250 employees will remain at a site near 16th and Old Cheney Road
The Technology Park site also will house 150 additional employees to be hired in Lincoln and leave room for another 200 jobs to be created in the future, said Mike Kerrey, executive vice president of insurance and business process solutions at Perot Systems.

About the Tech Park
What it is: Joint effort of the University of Nebraska, its foundation and the private sector. Its mission is to foster interaction between technology businesses and the university by helping transfer university-generated technology to the private marketplace, to nurture technology-based start-up companies and to promote technology-based economic development.
Location: Northwest Lincoln, adjacent to Highlands near Superior Street and Interstate 180.
Size: 150 acres, currently home to 18 companies with 1,000 employees in buildings comprising 257,000 square feet of space.
Major tenants: Verizon Wireless, Cabela’s
History: Founded in 1996, the park housed mostly small technology firms and startup companies until 2001, when Cabela’s opened its credit card processing center there. In 2007 Verizon Wireless opened a call center at the park that will eventually employ about 800 people.

“When we began looking for a way to bring our team together in one location, the University of Nebraska Technology Park proved to be the best fit, allowing us to strengthen our presence in Lincoln while also providing the required space for new job creation,” said Kerrey, a Lincoln native.
The jobs to be created are part of Perot’s infrastructure solutions unit, which is based at the company’s headquarters in Plano, Texas. Those jobs will include systems engineers and administrators to work with the Perot’s computer systems.
Most of the Lincoln employees currently do work in administrative and business services for insurance companies as part of Perot’s insurance and business solutions division.
Local and state officials said they were excited to bring what they called “high-tech, high quality” jobs to Lincoln.
“These are jobs that will have a dramatic impact on 150 families in Lincoln and a dramatic effect on the Lincoln economy in general,” said Mayor Chris Beutler.
Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman called Perot’s announcement an example of the state’s growing “competitiveness in ‘new economy’ jobs.”
“The jobs being created by Perot Systems in the coming years are exactly the kind of high-tech jobs we are trying to attract to Nebraska,” Heineman said.
Wendy Birdsall, Lincoln Chamber of Commerce president, said the company’s choice of the Capital City for expansion, “validates Lincoln as a major destination for major corporate investment and technology employment.”
Kerrey said Perot Systems, which has more than 23,000 employees in 20 countries, looked at several cities for the expansion of the infrastructure solutions unit.
Lincoln won out, he said, because of the company’s success here as well as the opportunity to build a new building and take advantage of various economic incentives.
In addition, Kerrey said the company hopes a location in the Technology Park will allow collaboration between Perot and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on employee referrals, internships and software development.
Perot’s estimated investment in the two-story building, which will be southwest of where Verizon Wireless built its call center, is $27 million — $23 million for construction of the building, $4 million in equipment and furnishings.
The city has estimated that the project will qualify for about $3 million in tax-increment financing, which allows the increase in property taxes created by the project to be used for public improvements to the area.
Perot also plans to seek state tax incentives available under the Nebraska Advantage Act, but Kerrey said he did not know the details.
Because the project involves TIF, it must go through various city approvals, and an initial hearing is scheduled at the Lincoln-Lancaster Planning Commission is tentatively scheduled for July 30.
City Council approval would be needed after that, and officials estimated that if everything goes smoothly, construction on the building could be under way by late summer or early fall.
Perot Systems hopes to be up and running in the new building by the third quarter of next year, when it will start hiring for the new infrastructure solutions jobs.
Once completed, the building will be the largest at the Technology Park, which opened in 1996, and Perot Systems will become the park’s largest employer.
Perot Systems came to Lincoln in 2005, when it bought Technical Management Inc. and its subsidiary Transaction Applications Group, more well known as TAG.
The company also operates in Omaha, where it employs about 70 people since it expanded there last year.

The article says "Perot Systems will be bringing about 150 new jobs with an average salary of $50,000 to Lincoln." I don't seem to remember reading that "thier (sic)" average salary is $50k. So, I can kinda understand the company's rationale if this is typical of the poorly paid employees.
Anyway, good news for Lincoln. Lots of construction dollars, and "NEW" average salary jobs of $50k. I'm one to be positive about it (and I make $56k...positive attitude, give it a try!). "

Also, as I have been in the 'tech world' in Lincoln/Omaha for the past 10 years I would say that we have plenty of high tech jobs in this area and they are paying 'high tech' wages. So maybe some people commenting here aren't looking hard enough, not qualified, bad interviews or have a poor attitude (most likely the attitude from what it sounds like).
You would probably be suprised how many companies are out there. But you have to go find them as they aren't advertising in the old fashioned newspaper. Try networking for once rather then complaining... "

In Lincoln, we do service for other companies. These insurance companies hire a company like Perot to provide service to their clients so as they can continue to grow their business by developing new products and continuing to Sell their product.
It is a shame that someone that has no concept of what Perot Systems in Lincoln does has the nerve to make comments bashing a pretty good company. Oh and 1 more thing....Pay is not everything, benefits, hours flexiblity also weigh in heavily. I know absolutely nobody that says they should not make more money. Keep that in mind when reading comments from peoploe that are just not happy people.
Very excited about the move, we having been waiting for a long time. Exciting. "

If you don't like the company or think you can make more money else where, quit. The company would be a much better place to work without all of the people complaining. If you don't want to drive to the new building, quit. Crying about this on a local paper website doesn't do anything except make all the employees seem like babies.
If you don't think you make enough money, DO YOUR JOB and you will get a raise. As previously stated, most of the work at the local Perot offices isn't that terribly hard. If you really don't like the company, quit. No one is making you work here.
And to the person who said the raises were 1-3%, you may want to check your facts. the average raise for last year was 2.5% and I am one who received the max of 6%. And guess what? All I did was work and do what I am supposed to do. "

There is the door, there is your chair. You choose.
I personally enjoy my flexibility, hours, and the pay is not that bad. Those that are whining about pay, are those that are in lowered skilled jobs. Those jobs have lots of turn over for the very reasons mentioned. They are entry level, they want you to perform and move up or move on.
I may not always like my job, no one loves their job everyday, but it is not that horrible either. And everyone would love to be paid more, especially with prices what they are today, but we can't have a profitable business model with $50K a year data entry folks or claims processors. Might as well just close the doors now if you believe you will ever get paid that. We would never get any business and have to close. Stop making the majority of the 1000+ employees look like whiners and cry babies. Take your negativity elsewhere. I am not a taggit, so don't lump me in as one with your incessant whining. "

So before you go calling people babies just consider yourself lucky you are on the "positive side" with your boss. At my job I had to get an attorney just to help prove I'm right. I've won several greivances and had 4 or more rules changed because they said I was wrong. I work for the city and it is so bias at my organization that I won't even go there. In fact just these last few months my supervisor changed the scores of two coworkers to not get a raise that was even after they had had their evaluation from another lower supervisor and were told of getting a raise. This is a bad supervisor not a bad worker!
The point being all of us like jobs, want the best benefits possible but we can not just "jump ship". Yes just consider yourself lucky or blessed and don't upset or criticize others.
