Local officials have scheduled a news conference for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the University of Nebraska Technology Park to “unveil specific plans regarding a major economic development project” at the park.

According to an e-mail sent to the Journal Star, the project involves a national company and “includes a new office building, new jobs and significant infrastructure investment for the Lincoln area.”

Technology Park President Steve Frayser declined Monday to give any details of the announcement, but speculation has centered on Perot Systems as being the company involved.

Perot, which is based in the Dallas suburb of Plano, has about 1,000 employees in Lincoln spread out among several sites doing administrative and business services functions for insurance companies.

According to documents submitted to the Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Department, the Technology Park project would include a 150,000-square-foot office building and cost around $25 million.

People in commercial real estate who spoke to the Journal Star earlier this month said Perot Systems has for years been looking for a local site to consolidate all of its Lincoln operations.

" there must be something bad about this. because lincoln is dying and there are no jobs and it's the worst place in the developed world and there's nothing to do here and the schools are the worst in the country and we all live in hovels and never travel anywhere.and it's getting worse. so this can't be good news. "

" What????? The Scotts aren't involved? Where's Vision 2015? Where's the city? Can't one of these entities come up with some way to get the Scotts involved? "

" Obviously there is nothing wrong with a company consolidating and constructing a new office building. It is good news to keep any jobs in Lincoln. But what is it doing in a Technology Park? "

" The Tech park? Or is UNL the next BIG real state developer in Lincoln.
Who will own the land and pay taxes, or is this just another free be. This friends is what is going to happen with State Fair Park!
Will impact fees be payed? Will UNL Police take take care of this area?
What will happen to the other properties that they now use will sit idle?
This is not a new company that will bring new jobs to Lincoln, but one more that wants to take at vantage of the city. "

" If you think Lincoln sucks so bad - leave. Move to wherever you think is better. I happen to live in a nice but not expensive house, and have a good job. Nobody gave me either of those things, I worked very hard for both of them for a long time. The community of Lincoln has been very good to me. I welcome any investment in infrastructure in our town. "

" Seriously people! How in the h#!! do you take this news and some how spin it in a negative way! Your unbelievably negative attitudes and never ending complaints are a big part of what is wrong with this city, state, and country. Get a grip and do something about things if you don't like them. If you're not going to contribute and your not going to provide any positive input then zip it! This move is nothing but good news. "

" It doesn't sound like any new jobs, just consolidating locations. Guess UNL is putting a spin on this technology park and pulling one over on the people that actually are buying into this joke. "

" Sad, sad news indeed. Economic development, increased educational opportunities for University students, new construction bids, $25,000,000 invested in the city limits, where will it end? Will I never again see a funnel cake? A 30-pound zucchini? A fresh pile of goat dung? Stop the madness! "

" This is just another example of how Lincoln is growing. Despite the nay-sayers, Lincoln is growing at over a 4% annual rate and the housing market hasn't taken a nose dive like most of the country.

Tech Park is not UNL land. If it was, private business would not be allowed to build on it. Only tax exempt business would be. Verizon is already out there along with some other thriving businesses. "

" I think when we hear "Tech Park" or "Innovation Park" we invision public entities with some help from private entities that are in the field of the research and development of new ideas and technologies that will facilitate the growth of private entities on private lands with private funding with no specific company gaining advantage over another. If indeed this is a tax payer subsidized private enterprise that is merely a corporate HQ it benefits no one but the company involved then this would seem to be "corporate welfare". Time will tell if this is just an elaborate "shell game" in which a company or two seeks to soak the public coffers in endeavers that should rightly fall under the spectrum of private enterprise. "

" Mark: The schools are worst in the country huh? I guess they must be considering you write in all lower-case and have run on sentences. While I agree that we are losing a lot to Omaha I don't think it is all that bad. No matter where anyone lives someone will complain about something. Where did you get the idea that everyone lives in a hotel in this city? "

Perrot also announced wrote on July 22, 2008 8:07 am:
" At their recent town hall meeting that employees would not be getting any raises this year nor cost of living increases because the company is for profit and they couldn't be expected to give the employees raises right now. If the employees didn't like it, they could move to a different company. Looks like we know where the money for the employees is really going. Keep in mind, they are having a hard enough time retaining employees now. This new facility won't bring in new jobs. "

" I love Lincoln and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Of course Lincoln is not perfect. You need to be a change agent instead of a complainer, Mark. Be a responsible voter and productive member of your community, working to make it better. Lincoln is experiencing the same economic troubles as every town and city across the nation. I welcome the development taking place in Technology Park. "

Great thing for Lincoln wrote on July 22, 2008 8:16 am:
" Any time that you have a company growing and expanding, that is a good thing for the city of Lincoln. Obviously they have outgrown their space needs if they are in multiple buidlings across Lincoln. They must be looking to strengthen their business by consolidating expense under one roof and gaining a greater economy of scale.

Perot is a full service IT provider. It services range from data center hosting to full serivce call centers to health care administration and insurance administration to government services support. It is one of the leaders of in the IT industry. If it doesn't belong in Tech Park, then I am not sure what does.

Tech park is a place to facilitate growth and development, not just research. It is a place for advancement of effective IT management. It fits the design criteria for the area. Do not misconceive tech park to mean a giant laboratory, for that is not what it is. That is what a research park is for. But don't think it is merely a place to work, either, developemnt of new methodolgies and efficencies takes place at nearly every workplace. If it doesn't, the business model fails.

And be thankful that someone else is also looking at expanding in Lincoln and growing Lincoln, that is not involved in Vision 2015 group. The city can't afford to put all its eggs into one callective basket. We need business leaders from all areas to develop their businesses. We shouldn't rely on one group to tell us what our future holds. That causes stagnation and decline. New ideas for growth should be welcomed, not downgraded by posters here.

Who knows this move amy spark others, or open places for smaller companies to fill in behind and use the indvidual facilities in a far better manner and create a cascade of growth. "

" oh yee of little faith

Wait until after the announcement to judge and put your negative spin on things.

You will see that this is great news for Lincoln.

It is amazing how negative you all are, I hope that somehow you find some joy in your lives and don't just find joy in dishing out negativity and bringing everyone else down. "

" I think Mark's mistake was in his whiner letter was he sounded so much like some of the posters on here that people did not read the sarcasm in his words. Or at least that is how I am reading it. Mark was, I believe, combining all of the negativity he has read on here recently and beating them to the punch. Unfortunately, he did not take it quite over the top enough and some people took him seriously. I hope I have portrayed you correctly, Mark. If not I apologize. "

wrong wrote on July 22, 2008 10:27 am:
" At the employee town hall meetings they did not say we were not getting raises this year. Raises for this year were given out in March and there aren't a whole lot of companies that give raises 4 months apart. Also, cost of living raises are not nearly as a common practice as they once were. If you want a raise, do your job. Most of the work at Perot isn't that terribly hard. Raises for your 2008 performance will be given in March. It is true that they said if you are not happy with your pay scale and another company will pay your more to feel free to leave. They can't stop you from pursuing other oppurtunities.
Whoever made the comment with Perot misspelled is spinning what was said to the employees. I was at all 6 of the meetings and none of the information provided was anywhere near what they are saying.
If you don't want Perot in Lincoln or NE, start complaining at city council meetings. Whining on message boards just gives out incorrect information. "

" THANKS, SARCASM & PEDRO! I guess I was too close to what some people actually say for the absurdity to not be obvious. I love Lincoln, moved here from the West Coast, and appreciate the impact LPS has had on our children's education. I was just trying to get a jump on the reflexive naysayers. "

Wrong...wrong wrote on July 22, 2008 11:59 am:
" That is not what was said at one of the meetings. They basically scolded the employees and said to move on if they didn't like it. There would be no raises for a year or more. Also, I notice you don't comment on the employee retention issue. Did you know that they can't currently stock enough employees in their various teams because they often quit due to, get this, the salary and other leave issues? Try getting a day off at TAG and you'll probably won't be able to. God forbid you get sick because you have to call in 48 hours in advance to let them know that you will be sick. "

Response to Wrong wrote on July 22, 2008 1:46 pm:
" I work at Perot. It is very well known that raises occur every March. It is easier to budget for 1000+ people that way. Remember it is a public business, the bottom line is what matters, and the company pays you to work. As with every work place, there are always people who feel underpaid and under appreciated (quite often it is those who do the least and complain the most). If you don't feel satisfied doing what you do, move on, you are probably bringing morale down anyways.

I believe the saying goes,"There is the door, there is your chair, you choose."

I appreciate the atmosphere I work in and have enjoyed the many years I have put in there. I may not like it all the time, but I have worked in far worse places in my lifetime. It is stilla service industry and there are always retention issues in a service line of work. People move in and out of related business with ease. The jobs that will be added in the new line of business aren't typical jobs that come to Lincoln. We are fortunate they are looking to expand here and not elsewhere.

P.S. thanks for the sarcasm, we got it. "
