Lincoln has been spared the Starbucks ax.

The gourmet coffee company on Thursday released a full list of the 600 company-owned stores it plans to close. That list includes seven Nebraska locations, but none in Lincoln.

Of the seven Nebraska Starbucks to be closed, five are in the Omaha metropolitan area — two in Omaha, two in Papillion and one in Bellevue. The other two are in Kearney and Fremont.

Only the Bellevue store has a firm closing date. The company said it will close by the end of this month. Starbucks said it will release additional details on the closing dates for the other stores at a later time.

Starbucks lists four company-owned Lincoln locations on its Web site: 12th and P streets, 28th and Pine Lake Road, 33rd and O streets and inside the Super Target at 40th and Yankee Hill Road. Starbucks inside the two Lincoln Barnes & Noble bookstores are operated as franchises.

" They have a weird practice of putting stores right next to each other. In Omaha there's a Starbucks inside Target on West Center, then there's another one about two hundred yards away in the strip mall fronting W. Center. How does that make sense? It's stuff like this that makes me wonder about corporate America sometimes.

And to all you Starbucks bashers - stow it. They have the best coffee in town, and if the local guys had better coffee instead of that watered-down mess then I'd shop there more often. I like Mark over at The Coffee House, but I don't like the coffee there. Same goes for Scooters - great people, but the coffee isn't as good. Ditto for The Blend - WONDERFUL people there, but I don't dig their coffee. It's all about the beans, people. "

I think there's a little bit of a Starbucks overkill. "

" Where do all there negative nabobs on here come from? So you don't like the coffee and it's too expensive. Shut up and don't go there! Starbucks is a US company that pays it's workers well and gives them good benefits. That's where the rubber meets the road today. We complain about all our companies moving overseas and there's no jobs that pay a decent wage anymore. Well Starbucks takes care of it's employees so that they can afford to buy something other than the crap that's made overseas and sold at Walmarts. Kudos to Starbucks! I think I might go have a cup and support good paying American jobs! "

" I love all the poseur haters here. You know what, there's been a BOOM in independent coffee houses in this town and introduction of other franchises (Scooters). So instead of killing the independents, those with good product survived and I'm betting are thriving thanks to the coffee revolution spearheaded by Starbucks. Hey, if I want something unique, or atmosphere, or just want to watch slacker kids, I'll go downtown. But there's something to be said for having a consistent product, which in my opinion only Starbucks and The Mill offer - and The Mill doesn't have drive-thru. If The Mill or Coffee House had 10 locations and Starbucks one, you'd call The Mill the evil one. "

Haitian Blue wrote on July 18, 2008 11:43 am:
" I've tried all the coffee at The Coffee House. I love Mark, and the rest of the folks there. Their coffee is good, but it's not as good as Starbucks - to me. It pains me to say that because I really like all the people there... and at The Mill... and at Scooters... and the Blend... but the bottom line is that my $2 cup of coffee (where do people get these ideas that it costs $4? for coffee?!?!?) tastes better at Starbucks than anywhere else, and I mean, ANYWHERE else. I lived on the West Coast and all over, and I've tried the java everywhere. Starbucks is better, that's the bottom line. The people at all the coffee shops here in town are nice - that's Lincoln for you. It's not about the people, it's about that product in the cup, and that's where it ends for me. "

Me wrote on July 18, 2008 11:47 am:
" People who don't like Starbucks probably drink coffee you can see through, which is basically damaged water! I don't get to have it on a regular basis , but it's a gift I give myself when I can get it. I'm very happy that Lincoln is upscale enough to have several Starbucks available, and agree the other pro-Starbucks posters ... if you don't like them, don't go there. A no-brainer. But you don't have to begrudge those of us who like the product. "

unostudent wrote on July 18, 2008 11:48 am:
" Thank goodness they're getting rid of some of those stores. We do not need a Starbucks on every single corner, in every parking lot and in all our grocery stores. Let some other coffee place, smoothie maker or tea shop get a chance to flourish. It will give everyone better coffee when there's some diversity to our choices in the morning, and the only way to get some better options is when Starbucks closes more than a few locations to let the "little guy" back in the market of quick-and-easy refreshment. "

" Having lived in Seattle for two years and having tried, at least once, all of the 20 coffee houses in a 10 block radius of my apartment, I can say without a doubt that the Coffee House has better coffee than most. Especially Starbucks. I prefer mochas and I have always found the Starbucks mochas to be very "grainy" and they often taste bitter and burnt. As for Scooters… Please!! I had coffee there once and actually spit it out. My 2 year old can make better coffee than Scooters! "

" I've tried numerous local shops and while they are good, they can't match Starbucks IN MY OPINION.

As far as being overrated...how can anyone say that honestly? Starbucks is very successful and has been for years. How can they be overrated?? Are they forcing people to pay? Are they robbing customers? Really people, think a bit, huh? "

Yeah, and Starbucks intentionally burns their beans so you sheeple will pay extra for sugary glop to cover up the horrible burnt taste. I guess if you follow the herd Starbucks is OK. True coffee lovers stay way away. "

" No "sugary glop" for me. Straight up Starbucks is it. The 'burnt Starbucks" is another overblown myth too brought on by some who think they can actually taste "the hints of berry and the sweet aroma of dirt with a touch of grass" from their fair trade, organic beans - only a "true coffee lover" can enjoy.

Yeah, Starbucks has them beat for sure. "

Common Sense wrote on July 18, 2008 3:29 pm:
" It's ridiculous to spend that mcuh for coffee when it would pay for a whole gallon of gas. I will buy my own beans and use my thermos and get a whole pound for the price of two cups of starbucks. I have never paid for Starbucks and I have never paid for water. Im not a rocket scientist but this is common sense. "

Consistency is key wrote on July 18, 2008 3:46 pm:
" I have occasionally had good coffee at the Mill or Jones, rarely at the Coffeehouse, and never at Scooters. My beef with the local places is that you never know what you're going to get. It all depends on the whim of a 20 year-old. At Starbucks, I can order coffee the way I like it in Lincoln, Kansas City, or New York City and get the exact same thing. I sometimes question why I pay $4 for a cup of coffee too, but at least I'm paying $4 for something I want rather than $4 for caffine roulette. "

While the employees at the Starbucks I frequent are always very friendly and courteous. I've also tried stopping at a couple of the local places for coffee on my way to work in the morning - and they aren't open yet. People want coffee early. "

Matt Poulsen wrote on July 19, 2008 3:45 pm:
" For all those claiming a cup of coffee cost $4, you need to 1) actually go to a starbucks or 2) quit twisting the facts.

A medium cup of coffee at starbucks costs about $1.80. You go to the Mill or any other place in Lincoln and an identical size will still cost you over $1.50. There is not a significant difference. The drinks that are costing $4 are hte fancy schmancy double latte frappuccinos...not the simple black coffee. "

Marisol wrote on July 19, 2008 4:47 pm:
" I would hate to see the Starbucks here close. They have good coffee and good service. I can't take the sullen poseurs at the Mill; the service is dreadful, just so annoying, and the coffee's not that great, either. Scooters is okay, but I love having a coffee shop with a drive through--and polite people working there. "

Cultiva wrote on July 19, 2008 8:57 pm:

You don't know coffee until you actually see the piles of beans in his store and watch the roaster IN THE STORE in action and have the owner actually explain what the heck the process is to get the cafinated goodness into the cup. The owner is an acomplished barista and his crew knows their stuff. "
