OMAHA — Two more Nebraska cities are considering a ban on pit bulls, becoming the latest additions to the ever-growing list.

Holdrege began discussions Tuesday night in a city council meeting. The Hastings City Council talked Monday after a local man was attacked.

Michael Heuertz told the Hastings council that a pit bull attacked him and his mother’s dog during a walk.

Council members say they need more information before any decisions are made.

In June, the city of Osceola banned pit bulls along with seven other breeds within its city limits.

Omaha officials also are talking about banning the breed after a dog attacked four people in June and ripped part of the scalp from a 15-month-old girl’s head.

" Let's hope Lincoln follows. We have neighbors who have them...I'm not even comfortable letting my daughter play outside anymore after our neighbor was almost attacked. Get rid of them! "

" Blame the owner, not the dog. I keep both of my dogs away from children (one is a poodle), because older dogs not around children much don't understand them. Fenced in yards, restraints should be mandatory for those who do own the "special" dogs. But, it's going to take a lot of "policing", because I bet most of these dogs aren't registered anyway. "

" Yeah, then your neighbors can buy rottweilers, dobermans, or presa canarios! Won't you feel so much safer?! "

" It isn't always the breed - some times it is how they are raised by the owner. I have been around a pit bull who is gentle - the grandkids play with her. "

" to get rid of all vicious dogs. i know all dogs can bite, but these kinds of dogs can kill, and thats a concern for all people. Time to get rid of them, and if you own one, you should be held liable to the fullest extent of the law if your dog hurts anyone even if that means jail time. "

" While walking my dogs (a pit bull mix and a German Shepard) in my neighbor hood last night, i came upon a man also walking his dogs. His German Shepard was on a leash but his Cairn Terrier was not. His dog than ran across the street and started biting my dogs while i had to repeatedly kick his dog to get it to stop. Keep in mind that my dogs sat there and got attacked but did not fight back at all. How can you say pits are mean and why aren't Cairn Terriers banned?? "

" Yes, we hear all the time "blame the owners, not the breed." And there is a whole lot of truth to that. If only there were a way to ban boneheaded pet owners... But how do you screen them? :) "

" It's pretty clear that the Pit Bull is well known as an aggressive breed. Anyone who deliberately purchases or obtains an aggressive animal is saying something about themselves. Why does a person own an animal known for its aggressiveness and viciousness? What KIND of person has a dog like this??? I'd like to run an experiment where we put all these owners in one room for five minutes, and see how long it takes for violence to errupt. I don't think it would be very long. How about all you Pit Bull owners submitting to background checks? I bet they have criminal records larger than the average person. If I had my way we'd let you buy your Pit Bull, then banish your dog AND YOU from city limits. "

" It is not the dog, it is clearly the owners. Animals behave like they have been treated. So it the animal is overly aggressive, their owner probably has treated them poorly. I have been around Pit Bulls that are just as nice and loving as a Lab. The media always publicize the stories about a pit bull attack, so it makes it seem like they are a terrible breed. The truth is any dog can attack and cause harm. Are we going to ban every dog for the city? All these cities are also banning Wolf hybrids’, which are the most loyal loving king of dog. Who you rarely hear about attacking anyone, but they still got banned. Every dog was once a wild animal that has been domesticated. When Animals attack we need to start looking at the owners a little more closely. "

" Which is the worse breed? Pit bulls or pit bull owners? "

" I believe Lincoln should consider an ordinance where ANY breed of dog that attacks AND harms people should be taken away from the owners. I agree pit bulls are awful. My office is in a residential area and, last week, my co-worker took a walk on his break and was attacked by a pit bull. He was forced to go to the emergency room to get stitches. Hopefully those dogs never return to the owner. This has gotten ridiculous. "

" What we should do is ban people from having opinions unless they actually know some FACTS. People don't own pit bulls because they are aggressive. Most people own these dogs because they are some of the best all around dogs anybody could own. There are more Grand Champion Pit Bull Terriers than any other breed, and this is by a ridiculously large margin. Assuming that someone has a pit bull to have an aggressive dog is just plain naive and is an argument that I would expect to hear from a third grader. I am a computer engineer at a very reputable company, had an extremely distinguished scholarship, teach high school drumline and have been accepted into a top 10 MBA school. I also own a fully registered, spayed female pit bull terrier and I will never own another breed of dog. I must be a real threat to society. Go play with a pit bull, heck, try raising one. Watch the Dog Whisperer for goodness sakes; learn some facts. This is a sad, sad America we live in where people are willing to give up their own personal rights to even own a breed of dog of their liking just for the perception of safety. It's our RIGHT to choose whether or not to own a pit bull. It's our DUTY to stop others from taking our basic freedoms away without just cause. People, please stop succumbing to media hype and fear mongering and DO SOME REAL RESEARCH before having an opinion. "
