Fire crews extinguished a fire Thursday after lightning struck the roof of an office at 5101 Central Park Drive.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Derald Murrell said the lightning hit the roof of a building shared by Excel Development Group and Doane College. Several people were still working inside, he said, and one of them reported the strike.

No injuries were reported, Murrell said.

Witnesses living nearby said it sounded like a transformer blew at about 7:24 p.m., when the call came into fire crews. When first responders arrived three minutes later, Murrell said they saw moderate smoke exiting from the roof.

Crews entered the attic area, cut a hole in the roof to provide ventilation and got the fire under control with 20-25 minutes.

All in all, Murrell said, it was a pretty routine beginning to a night of thunderstorms.

“This is something we deal with all the time,” he said.

" ......Deputy Chief Derald Murrell is one heck of a guy. Kudos to him and his men for the usual good work. I believe he has the respect of his fellow firefighters and quietly does his job well. Good job Derald Murrell!!!!! "

" Why when there is any LFD article do we have praise no matter what has happened. I am starting to believe that firefighters themselves are writing on the blogs when they are sitting in the station for hours on end getting paid "

" I was in class at Doane last night and seeing the flash and hearing the strike made my heart stop, it was the loudest sound I've ever heard! "

" @Its their job

That's like saying all police officers do is sit in their cars all day watching traffic. You should be thankful the LFD puts up with the monotony of "sitting in the station for hours on end" ready to jump when your house is on fire.

Thanks LPD and LFD! "

" Perhaps you would rather the articles focus on faults of LFR?

I for one support LFR because they have been there for me, when I have needed them for 1 fire and 5 medical emergencies. I'd much rather praise LFR than criticize them. "
