Briefs: TierOne among biggest Nasdaq gainers
TierOne Corp. was among the biggest percentage price gainers on the Nasdaq Stock Market Thursday.
The banking company’s stock, pummelled for the past year by setbacks in lending in Las Vegas and Florida, rose $1.14, almost 35 percent, to close at $4.41 on almost 380,000 shares traded.
That made it the eighth biggest percentage gainer on the Nasdaq market, according to Nasdaq’s Web site.
Other bank shares were among the biggest gainers as the market continued to respond favorably to lower oil prices.
UTC’s aerospace business suffers
HARTFORD, Conn. — United Technologies Corp.’s stock rose almost 6 percent as the company reported its second-quarter profit rose 11 percent.
United Technologies owns Hamilton Sundstrand, an aerospace company with a plant in York.
The conglomerate also raised its full-year outlook for revenue and per-share earnings, sending shares up nearly 6 percent on Thursday.
After strong orders through the early months of 2008, the company saw a slowdown in spare parts orders at its jet engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney and aerospace manufacturer Hamilton Sundstrand in the second quarter, a spokesman said.
Harley profit tumbles but beats estimates
NEW YORK — Harley-Davidson Inc. said Thursday its second-quarter profit fell sharply as a weak economy, record-high gas prices and lower consumer confidence continued to hobble the iconic motorcycle maker’s shipments and sales.
But the Milwaukee-based company stood by its outlook for the year, and its revenue and earnings, 95 cents per share, beat Wall Street’s expectations. Shares of Harley rose more than 7 percent.
Revenue dropped nearly 3 percent to $1.57 billion from $1.62 billion in the year-ago quarter.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 76 cents per share on $1.4 billion in revenue, on average.
In Lincoln, Lincoln Industries finishes chrome, supplies parts and does supply-chain management for Harley. Tenneco in Lincoln makes exhaust systems for the motorcycle manufacturer.
Novartis reports moderate consumer-products sales
BASEL, Switzerland — Drug maker Novartis AG on Thursday results that beat market analysts’ expectations.
But growth of generic brand Sandoz and consumer health products was only moderate because of difficult market conditions in the United States.
Novartis' plant on Cornhusker Highway between Lincoln and Waverly is the largest manufacturing site in the over-the-counter division and the only one in the United States. It is also a major research and development site for OTC products.
