Girls Shrine Soccer Classic

Lincoln Journal Star Super-State captain Molly Thomas of Millard North scored twice Saturday to lead the North to a 3-0 win against the South at the Shrine Soccer Classic at the Osborne Sports Complex in Hastings.

Thomas, a Nebraska recruit, opened the scoring on a breakaway pass from York’s Alexa Staehr. Thomas scored her second goal in the 72th minute.

The North’s other goal was by Lincoln East’s Deanne Schmidt, with an assist from former Spartan teammate Kristin Schumacher at the 78th minute.

Boys Shrine Soccer Classic

The South squad, led by Aaron Galley’s two goals and two assists,  beat the North 8-0 at the Osborne Sports Complex. Galley, who played at Millard West, was named player of the game. Former Millard South standout Devon Strecker scored three goals. Southwest’s Seth Neben, Southeast’s Jordan Green and Pius X’s Marcus Schademann also scored goals for the South squad.

S. Dakota-Nebraska girls basketball

Lincoln Southeast graduate Katie Birkel scored a record 31 points, but it wasn’t enough, as South Dakota earned a 97-88 win against Nebraska in the South Dakota-Nebraska All-Star game in Yankton, S.D. Birkel, who was named her team’s most valuable player, broke the previous record of 30 points set by Angie Janis in 2002. South Dakota tied a record with nine blocked shots.

S. Dakota-Nebraska boys basketball

Louie Krogman scored 25 points and dished out seven rebounds as the South Dakota all-stars defeated the Nebraska all-stars 89-85 in the annual game in Yankton, S.D. Nebraska was led by Beatrice’s Mike Fox and Porter Birtell of Lutheran Northeast, who both finished with 18 points. Fox also had four assists.

NSWCA All-Star Classic

Derek Rowe of Syracuse decisioned Bruce Zurek of Sargent/Burwell in the 141-pound weight class to help the East to a 17-12 win against the West at the NSWCA All-Star Classic at Adams Central High School in Hastings. Beatrice’s Brad Cusatis finished 1-1 at 149 pounds for the East, while Ethan Studebaker of Raymond Central was 1-0 at 165 pounds.
