OMAHA — A group of Boy Scouts who were at a camp hit by a deadly tornado will get to meet President Bush in Washington at the end of the month.

The Boy Scouts of America Mid-America Council says the trip is for the Scouts who attended the leadership camp in Little Sioux, Iowa. Four boys were killed when a tornado struck the camp June 11.

The camp is about 40 miles north of Omaha, and many of the Scouts are from Nebraska.

Boy Scouts representatives say the visit to Washington is July 30-31, and includes a tour of the White House.

The Boy Scouts say it will cost $1.8 million to rebuild the camp.

" Why must you be so negative?? Probably not an optimistic person, probably always holding a grudge on everyone huh? No matter what you think or disapprove the President, he is still our President. If I were still a little teenager and get to meet with the President of the United States, it would be a great opportunity no matter what party affiliation you are. So why don't you just get off the internet and go do something useful "geez". "

" 1.8 million to rebuild the camp!!?? I understand the need for a storm shelter. And I think the Boy Scouts is a great organization, But 1.8 million is blatantly taking advantage of a situation where lives were tragically lost and someone is looking to cash in. The camp could be easily rebuilt for under half a million and that's a stretch. Remember they go there to camp out and learn to rough it. They don't need individual cabins. "

" I too think that is an outrageous amount to spend. I understand the need for a dining hall and offices with a health office included plus a swimming pool if that was destroyed but the whole thing doesn't need redoing. Scouts go to camp to camp. I also think they need underground storm shelters. We all know that you need to be below the ground in a tornado. "

" $1.8 million to rebuild a camp that had maybe $200,000 in structures? Now off to meet the POTUS? I agree with WOW... somebody is cashing in on a tragedy. "

" Ummm I think I might re-consider the Bush visit. I mean, these kids have had a terrible experience with a natural disaster. Bush has invaded a sovereign county looking for WMD that didn't exist... sat back and watched NOLA go under water... does NOTHING about the gasoline shortage except to make it worse by filling the national reserves with $140/barrell oil... hasn't caught Osama Bin Laden in 7 years of bombing and killing... if I was a parent I'd keep my kid away from a guy this unlucky. They've had their share of bad luck. "

" I agree...that is a high price for a campground. I am glad that these scouts get such an awesome opportunity to meet the President. They are heroes and a lot of heroes get to meet the President. We shouldn't undermine what those scouts did for each other that night. I think about them all the time and can't imagine what they went through. "

" 1.8 million? To build a camp that is ridiculous. What do they want? A Wii in each high tech cabin? or a camp like it was? How about getting a few potential Eagle Scouts to rethink that amount? I would like to know who writes their insurance........I am switching if they get 1.8 million for a camp. "

" To those of you who are whining about the 1.8 to repair/rebuild: The must build a storm shelter, rebuild offices and dining facilities, group meeting rooms, and rebuild the camp directors home (remember he lives there full time with his family), rebuild the swimming pool, replant trees, rebuild/improve the road(s) that lead to the camp, and clean-up and dispose of all the trash and debris left from the storm. All of this must meet current building and safety codes. That is a pretty big list and I'm sure there are other items on it. 1.8 doesn't sound too over the top to me. "

" How about they wait another 7 months until Obama gets in the White House and there is someone worth meeting. "

Dear Bob wrote on July 5, 2008 4:15 pm:
" So let's see if you spent 150K for Care takers house, 50K for storm shelter,75K for Dining hall,40K to frame up meeting rooms and a couple offices in the dining hall building, 30K for swimming pool, 10K for trees,20K for a lane paved, and 5K for clean up. that comes to $380000.00
A far cry from 1.8 million.
Are you the contractor who is bidding this job Bob??

Are you the contractor that bid the job? "

" 1.8 million, 2.3 million. why do you care? it's their money. "
