A 33-year-old who stole keys from a Lincoln man's pocket outside a church and stole $41,000 of items from his home has pleaded no contest to burglary.

Larry W. Carter entered the plea in Lancaster County District Court on Wednesday. He is set for sentencing in August.

On Jan. 6., outside the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Carter stole a set of car keys from a Lincoln man’s pocket, drove the victim’s 2004 Cadillac to the man’s residence, near the 3400 block of Cape Charles West Road, and stole $41,000 worth of goods from it. The car was found near the 1700 block of C Street.

A day later, Carter sold a Dell Inspiron computer to a clerk for $125 at a store near 11th and B streets, police said. The clerk called police, who confirmed it was one of the items stolen from the Lincoln residence. Carter came back to the store the next day, and police arrested him.

Last month, Lancaster County District Judge Jodi Nelson sentenced Carter's co-defendant, Michael Robert Aguilar, 33, to five to eight years in prison for his part in the burglary.

" I'm glad he got caught, but how dumb do you have to be? If you're going to rob a house and try to pawn stuff in the same city (especially lincoln which has very few pawn shops) you're going to get caught. At least go to Omaha/Bluffs. I can't believe how stupid criminals are...then again if they were smart they wouldn't need to break the law to get ahead in life. "

" He didn't rob the house - he burglarized it. Look at the clearance rate on residential burglaries in the FBI UCR. The vast majority of them are never solved. It's no different locally, due to most residences having no alarms or video surveillance gear. Businesses are more likely to have that gear, which is why business burglaries have a higher clearance rate than their residential counterpart. "

" Well, most of those types of criminals don't do it to get "ahead" in life - they do it to "get by". Not saying it makes it right. Not saying it justifies it, but to say that these ppl advance themselves through society that way is highly misleading. My experience shows that very few ppl actually >choose< petty crime as their "job". As we can see in the article above, it's a lot more work than it's worth. "
