HOLDREGE — The temporary repairs made to Central Nebraska Public Power’s main irrigation canal earlier this month didn’t hold.

Central’s Dave Ford says when water was released into the damaged section, it tore the heavy-duty plastic liner than had been installed.

So Central decided it had to complete permanent repairs much sooner than expected. A parade of concrete trucks visited the canal to pour a new floor and repair the broken wall.

The damage is near a siphon that transports irrigation water beneath Plum Creek.

The canal transports water to Central’s irrigation customers as far as 50 miles east into Kearney County.

Flow of water in the canal is scheduled to resume Tuesday if the concrete cures in time.
