Readers remember John Liescheski
The sudden death of Pius X junior John Liescheski really touched readers, making the story the most commented on JournalStar.com for the week. Classmates, teachers and many who said they didn’t even know John expressed their condolences.
Among the 86 comments:
“John was a very kind, loving and humorous young man. He was quick to make you laugh, with a smile that would go on for miles,” TeacherofJohn wrote. “A life taken too soon, with dreams and aspirations lost. Many questions left unanswered to the one up above. John is in a better place right now. Give us the strength to deal with our emotions, and to remember the fond memories that we have. We will miss you, John, but you will never be forgotten.”
Megan pius senior said: “John, you were an amazing person. Your smile is an inspiration to the school and to the football team! You will be forever in the hearts of the Pius family. We miss you and love you. May angels lead you in!”

Most commenters were upset that Game and Parks officials killed the bear and wanted a protocol in place to deal with a wandering bear when such a thing happens again in Nebraska.
“As a Nebraskan living in Colorado, I’m ashamed,” Mac commented. “They had to shoot it? Sounds as if Nebraska Game and Parks took the easy — and cheap — way out. It only cost them a bullet. Wildlife, especially wildlife that is rare to Nebraska, is to be cherished, not gunned down …”
But there’s always another side:
“Black bears are supposed to be afraid of people; this one wasn’t,” mitchy_v wrote. “It would only be a matter of time before someone got hurt.”

Many follow-up stories don’t generate the same amount of interest the original story did, but this one was different. Bear with me, if you will.
“Relocating would have been a much more appropriate choice,” CareBears said. “It’s not as if it wasn’t an option. NE Game and Parks has the ability. I think the decision they made was done in haste and with ignorance. Besides, who was here first — us or the bears?”
Where exactly took issue with that idea: “Where exactly would you like G&P to have relocated it to? Mahoney State Park? Read the article. Nebraska lacks large tracts of public land like CO and WY, and those other states certainly wouldn’t be pleased with us dumping it on them.”

The vast majority of commenters favored continuing Community Learning Centers, although some weren’t sure money for them should come out of the city budget.
“I have been involved in several CLC programs for the last several years,” involved wrote. “The city is a vital part to CLC, and many people will lose their jobs if these programs are cut. … The CLC and Rec programs matter … they make a difference in so many lives!”
Good job Mayor said: “In years past while LPS budgets have increased close to 6 percent per year, the city of Lincoln has increased next to nothing. It’s time the ‘cash cow’ LPS took part of the responsibility in difficult economic times.”
5 Bruning takes housing discrimination fight to CNN; 54 comments published.
Readers faulted Attorney General Jon Bruning’s national TV appearance and statements regarding illegal immigrants, although he had some defenders.
“Iraq, CNN. Maybe Jon Bruning should focus his efforts on the job that hardworking Nebraskans pay him to do, instead of trying to build political hype for whatever office he runs for next,” Bruning is a joke wrote.
Howie saw it differently: “Go get ’em Jon. When will the people see it our way. I do not want one single cent of my taxes paying for an illegal self-help defense fund.”
