Health workers testing dead birds for West Nile
By The Associated Press
OMAHA — Now that warmer weather is settling in, Douglas County health officials are turning their concerns to West Nile virus.
Health workers started collecting dead birds this week to test for the virus.
West Nile is spread by the bite of a mosquito that has fed on an infected bird.
There were 146 human cases of the disease reported in Nebraska last year, including three deaths.
Experts say that fewer than one out of 150 people who are bitten by an infected mosquito and becomes infected will get seriously ill.
Health workers are asking the public to report dead birds to the health department at (402) 444-7481.
